Definition of Hero: A person noted for feats of courage or nobility of purpose, especially one who has risked or sacrificed his or her life.

You should read the citations on this website so you can realize the true definition of a hero. It has all the Medal of Honor Recipients in all US history.

    http://www.history.army.mil/moh.html

Let us remember those brave man and women who gave their lives, for their brothers/ sisters in arms and their country. THEY'RE THE HEROES!

PD. I have a lot of admiration for this particular recipient:

    RUBIO, EURIPIDES

Rank and organization: Captain, U.S. Army, Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 28th Infantry, 1st Infantry Division, RVN. Place and date: Tay Ninh Province, Republic of Vietnam, 8 November 1966. Entered service at: Fort Buchanan, Puerto Rico. Born: 1 March 1938, Ponce, Puerto Rico. Citation: For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty. Capt. Rubio, Infantry, was serving as communications officer, 1st Battalion, when a numerically superior enemy force launched a massive attack against the battalion defense position. Intense enemy machinegun fire raked the area while mortar rounds and rifle grenades exploded within the perimeter. Leaving the relative safety of his post, Capt. Rubio received 2 serious wounds as he braved the withering fire to go to the area of most intense action where he distributed ammunition, re-established positions and rendered aid to the wounded. Disregarding the painful wounds, he unhesitatingly assumed command when a rifle company commander was medically evacuated. Capt. Rubio was wounded a third time as he selflessly exposed himself to the devastating enemy fire to move among his men to encourage them to fight with renewed effort. While aiding the evacuation of wounded personnel, he noted that a smoke grenade which was intended to mark the Viet Cong position for air strikes had fallen dangerously close to the friendly lines. Capt. Rubio ran to reposition the grenade but was immediately struck to his knees by enemy fire. Despite his several wounds, Capt. Rubio scooped up the grenade, ran through the deadly hail of fire to within 20 meters of the enemy position and hurled the already smoking grenade into the midst of the enemy before he fell for the final time. Using the repositioned grenade as a marker, friendly air strikes were directed to destroy the hostile positions. Capt. Rubio's singularly heroic act turned the tide of battle, and his extraordinary leadership and valor were a magnificent inspiration to his men. His remarkable bravery and selfless concern for his men are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit on Capt. Rubio and the U.S. Army.

I read KC's remarks as anti-affirmative action, not anit-race. They are two completely different things. I firmly believe that affirmative action not only doesn't work but actually biases against certain races. I am oppossed to it and think it should be abolished. This is coming from a white man yes, but I was married to a black woman who agreed with me. As KC said "If you're stupid, why should you go to college anyway?"

I think this board is getting a little heated and people are reading their own political agenda's into what others are writing. It's not too late for cooler heads to prevail, everyone should just think before writing.

I'll say this as tactfully as I can. If you didn't understand what was said/typed, don't automatically asume that the writer is ______. Ask, clarify, inquire, etc. Your reply proves nothing other than you think you're better than me because you are an officer & I'm an enlisted.

I could care less if a person is purple with pink polka dots. Color of skin should not be a factor that determines if that person gets a scholarship over someone who is green with orange polka dots. I don't care what color anyone is, NO ONE should be given a free ticket based on the color of their skin. Affirmative Action is RACISM. That's right, I said RACISM.

    ^^^^^^ Thank You ^^^^^^

I goofed around & pretty much wasted my HS years. I graduated with a less than stellar GPA. I (as I so rightfully deserved) did not get one $0.01 of assistance for college. Not because I'm dumb, because I was lazy. I will pay for my laziness for the rest of my life while I see stupid people (who have degrees) get paid more than me just because they have been to college. Now, why on earth should anyone get $$$ for college just because of their skin color. If they screwed around like I did, why do they get rewarded just because their skin is _____?

    KC-10 FE out...

The issue here isn't whether any particular war is/was justified or whether affirmative action is good or bad. I think reasonable people can disagree on those things. However, I don't consider dissing American servicemen and servicewomen who do their duty reasonable under ANY circumstances. And I am a guy who protested the Viet Nam War. McCain did his duty. He stepped up to the plate and got hit by a fastball. What the hell did he do to deserve disrespect? Nothing, that's what! I have voted Democrat in every Presidential election since 1972, but I might switch and vote for McCain this time because he's got sand! Here's a guy who went to the Deep South and said out loud that the Confederate Flag is a symbol of racism and oppression. Even if you disagree with that statement, how often do you hear a Presidential candidate speak his mind like that? His candor and his military service are big plusses for me - way more appealing than the Democrats still in the running.

I want to keep the thread respectful, but I vehemently disagree with the squirrelman on this one.

Vietnam was a civil war between North and South to decide whether a socialist nationalistic animistic bureaurcrasy should rule the country for the good of their own people..... or a western oriented, Christian military government of bureaucratic corrupt schemers and exploiters should run the country for the benefit of foreigners and their own narrow selfish capitalistic interests.

How many Vietnamese fought in OUR civil war??

BEST book about the conflict in Vietnam: "A Bright Shining Lie" by Neil Sheehan

Learn some history, gentlemen, or repeat the mistakes of the past again and again.

IF McCain was a hero.....then every Aryan- superman murdering SS man in Hitler's army was also???? Just doing their duty, serving their country, following orders, isn't that right?? It's logical. does that make them heroes too?? Just asking.......

    PuC,

Man, I wanted to stay clear of this flamefest but I have this to say....you are misinterpreting what KC is trying to say. He is not calling minorites stupid. He is saying that you should only be accepted into college based on your smarts, it should not matter what color your skin is. That anybody should not get a free ticket just because they are a minority. Be accepted for your grades and test scores, not your ethnicity. This digresses from the main topic, but this is common place here.

Modesty is not KC's best policy, and he does get out of line with the name calling sometimes. I try and watch my temper as well, as name calling does not prove intelligence, quite the opposite in fact....however, when someone is provoked, or talks about a controversial subject I can see how it comes out at times. I would personally prefer it if the insults were left out and a logical debate ensued. I think those two thing are impossible in a political debate though.

How about some of these to cool things down?? :drink: :stripper: :drink: :stripper: Norcal will even bring his llama in for helga to play with.... :xxx: :llama:

War is hell, but is the price we pay for freedom. Instead of all of us paying a small price, some have had to pay a huge price. I thank everyone who ever put on the uniform, because I owe someone a lot. So do a lot of other people. We can begin that thanks by being respectful to all of our service men and women, and especially our veterans. Shame on anyone who would do otherwise.God Bless The USA!

I get it...the second I say what I am, I'm pulling rank on someone. That's a double standard if I've ever seen one...you post pictures of yourself in uniform, various others are proud of the fact that they served the way they served...but the second I say I'm an officer for the sake of saying that I've gotten a college education I'm pulling rank on someone. (And yes...I know some enlisted/NCO's have college degrees, too) Really, dude...that's not the way I work. Nevertheless, you ALL have my sincerest apologies for me so ungraciously stating what I do. I didn't realize it would offend you. And for the record, I never told you what rank I am. I could be brand new for all you know. So, why be tactful...let it fly. You did on Squirrelman...cuss me out, too. If you think your tiny sphere of influence would show up as anything larger than a blip on my personal radar, you are mistaken, sir. So, fire away...you can say whatever you want to me...really. This is a motorcycle forum, dude...it's not like it's going to leave here, right?

Regardless, the statement was mainly to call attention to a clearly obtuse statement...oh, sorry, I don't want to seem pretentious...slow-witted statement about how the slow-witted apparently get free rides to college.

"I AM NOT responsible to make sure you get to college just because your skin color is different than mine. If you're stupid, why should you go to college anyway?"

If you didn't mean to insinuate that minorities are stupid, these should have been two seperate statements...seeing as how you're saying their completely unrelated, right? If I misinterpreted (which, also for the record, I don't believe I did) the manner in which you wrote this statement to anyone who was paying attention to what was actually written suggests that the two statements are linked. You also made a statement about people not being able to afford THEIR mortgages being retards...so, does that mean that someone buying a house based off of a reasonable portion of their income and then getting laid off in a slumping economy is a retard? By your statement, it would seem so. If not, you should take the time to make sure it's properly understood by those that do not rule.

I challenge you to find one example of someone who got a "free ride" based on their skin color. I know I didn't...I have the bills to prove it. I, too, am not a fan of affirmative action. I didn't take high school/college "off." I worked my ass off as I am in graduate school now (oh...am I allowed to say that here? I don't want to seem like I'm better than anyone for getting a master's degree.) I want every bit of my effort to show through for what it is...excellent work. I fully agree with you about affirmative action...how do you think that makes someone like me feel that people would judge me not as deserving of my position (there I go again with the position)? I don't want the shit, either. I don't need it. I can beat out most people (of any color, mind you) for my position (geez, will I ever stop with the position already!) with minimal effort. Besides, I like the challenge.

    Derstuka,
I, too, am a fan of logical debate. I, too, see that it almost never happens here. I apologize for "making" you get involved with my inadvertant misunderstanding with KC-10 FE. However, a poorly written statement is a poorly written statement...and what he said is a pretty f***ing poorly written statement. If you want to enforce a no-name-calling standard, enforce it. Why not? If you don't, you can expect people like KC-10 FE to go on calling people names for stating their opinion. I find it funny, though, how KC-10 FE can call people incredibly hateful names and the forum turns the other cheek. However, the second I suggest he says something reprehensible, I'm the bad-guy. I could've called him a fag...or a tool...or suggested that he has a menstrual period...but I didn't.

This post prooves that just because you are an officer does NOT mean that you have any brains AT ALL!!! The officers (except for the few which actually work for a living) sit on their high horse making their little training plans and so forth, but when the going gets tough, where do they turn??? To an enlisted men!!! Com'on PuC, learn to READ for crying out loud!!! Quit whining!!!

I don't remember hearing about any of our leaders killing millions of Jews, or trying to wipe an entire race of people off the planet. Our leaders have done things which HAD to be done to protect this country. Did you hear about 9-11 or were you playing with your toe-nail-clipping collection? How many innocent Americans died that day? Remember, we didn't start this fight, but we WILL finish it.

Ok, this is a free forum, and anybody can post whatever they want, but please keep in mind what you start when you start a controversial topic. These things can spiral out of control and create nothing but hate and anger in the end. This thread is giving me a headache. I cannot make excuses for KC, or anybody else for that matter, for how they typed certain statements or insult other members. Please stop insulting one another and the harsh name calling. That applies to everybody who is guilty of such.

Squirrel is throwing this out as bait, and trying to get everybody riled up. I almost think he has a bone to pick with this website and/or some of its members after KC's "what did you do today?" thread went out of control and he was insulted. If that is the reason, get over it, and join the forum with something positve and fun. Things are too tense right now. All I can say is that I am tried of this thread and I consider it useless. I have thought about this and my decision is to lock it. If you don't like that, write your local congressman. Let's see what tomorrow brings.... :closed_2:
