Funny story. I just picked up an 85 vfr that had also been dropped. The idle screw is slightly bent. Simply pushing on it will cause the idle to fluctuate. My choke is fine over here, but i get the same symptoms. Sometimes the bike idles between 1200-1500, other times it sticks to 3k. It ran fine all through the cold weather we had in chicago last week. Today, with temperatures in the 70s, it's got the high idle.

Push in on all the brass choke valve. If they move at all, then the choke is not closed. The choke valves are very sensitive and must be completely seated.

If you pull the carbs, check the linkages very carefully to ensure they are not hitting the plenum or rubber hoses.

Check the linkages when everything is closed and also when the choke and throttle are wide open.
