    Hey VFR,

You ride the backroads much? Where is your playground?

I use my VF as A to B. When I'm riding for the hell of it I just ride off in some direction and hope I start seeing streets I've never heard of.

I really need to hit some twisties though, I'm killing the mileage on my new rubbers; I've got chicken strips the width of chicken nuggets.

If you've got any routes I'd love to hear 'em!

+1 Maxima chain wax for me! They even have a travel size can for those interstate trips.

What I do is go to a car wash place and use the high pressure water hose to clean up the chain. Then I drive around for about 15 minutes to dry off the chain and warm it up. I spray the lube on and let it sit for about 20 minutes and then I ride for about 15 minutes to get it caked on.

Oh a great tip is sometimes I get gunk on the chain and I've found that spraying WD-40 helps clean it up. That and I get a lot of paper towels and wipe the gunk off.

Hell, I know the backroads of SD like a hooker knows the streets of Vegas! Only without the STD's! haha. Well, you are damn close to me (I am in Clairemont/PB area), so hit me up if you want to go for a stroll sometime. I need to head past Tierrasanta one way or another to get out east to the twisties.

Chain Wax is the way to go. You won't want to use anything else after you try it.

Same here. When I rode my 599 on a trip last month, I stuck one of the little cans under the seat and sprayed the chain about ever day and a half. Didn't bother cleaning it while I was there though (about 1500 miles)

I use the Bel Ray chain lube. I have not had any problems with it flinging and it lasts. Bel Ray, :first: in my book.

I have used PJ1 black and blue and found that the black , while keeping things slick, produces more gunk on drive sprocket area and rear wheel than the blue version.

Also used Honda chain lube and it does work pretty well but is expensive, at least where I live.

Have recently purchased a couple of cans of Du Pont Teflon Multi-Purpose Dry wax lubricant, as some websites and reviews have had very positive reviews of the stuff. Initial impressions are good, though I will wait to see how it performs over the long haul. Only used it for a couple of rides so far this year. For $5/11 oz can, it's much cheaper than dedicated "motorcycle" chain lube.

BTW, this is on a chain with over 10,000 miles on it, and already having a few tight and kinked spots. Too much riding in the rain maybe? Or excessive throttle usage?

I also use WD-40 to clean the chain, spraying a rag with it and wiping down the chain.

I seldom get more than 15,000 miles from a chain, and do change both sprockets when replacing the chain.

Yup. My dealership recommended the Maxima Chain Wax so that is what I use.

For the bicycles I use White Lightning. (We have such a dry climate in the desert so we don't worry too much about wet, gooey conditions.)

I am surprised to hear a few of you using WD40 on your chains to clean them. WD40 is a penitrating cleaner and will seepe past the O rings and break down the grease. Sealed O ring chains have the Lube captive behind the O rings. The Lube you are spraying on the chanis is to keep down the friction to reduce wear on the sprockets and external chain parts. This will ultimately help the chain drive components last longer. WD40 could in effect reduce the mileage you get out of your chain.
Check out this article on the subject.

    P.S.
I use Honda Pro chain lube in the Red and Black can. It hangs on pretty well. There is some fling off but it cleans up easilly. I have almost 10K on this chain and it will probably last a while longer.
