Funny thing about where I live (Chicago suburbs).

If I go riding on a Saturday or Sunday morning early (6 or 7 am), pretty much any bike I see on the road waves before I even do (Harley or not). As the morning progresses into afternoon, less and less people wave. By noon, Harley riders will generally not wave at all and maybe 70% of everyone else does.

Years ago I just decided that people who are really into the sport/hobby like I am, go out to enjoy empty roads early in the morning just like I like to do. The posers come out later in the day when traffic is heavier and riding is not as enjoyable.

We had a longtime radio talk show host in Chicago named Steve Dahl, who I normally couldn't stand but he had a funny story about riding and waving. He knew someone with a couple of Harleys who offered to take him riding. When he was briefing Dahl before the ride, he told him that if he is going to wave he better look closely to make sure the oncoming bike is not Japanese. Dahl said he felt like he was a WWII AA gunner trying to make out the Japanese planes from ours.

I wave to everyone, if you have bugs in your teeth you're OK by me.
Around here more than half of the HD riders won't wave.
Look right at you and don't wave.
You know when they aren't going to, you can tell-
they're the ones with their feet waaay out in front of them toes out- horizontally.
I've seen those guys on the BMW's with the yellow vests etc...
Where are they heading- Peru? No, the coffee shop by my house...
I have come up with a new hand signal for deer in road.
Let go of the bars and make antlers with your hands holding your thumbs by your temples. No don't stick your tongue out.

Here in New Zealand it doen't sound that it's a lot different than the US.The most consistant wavers are the Jap sports/touring bikes. The Triumph /Harley owners just sneer at you and mostly the cruisers ignore you as well.
I like to try and wave at all but find myself waiting to identify my target first!!!lol

I wave if I can wave and I nod if I am more concerned about what's happening in front of me. I have lots of people initiate a nod but that's usually when were on a big bridge with trucks and cross winds all over the place.

I try to wave at everyone. This wave thing comes up a lot, and has for years. I had a couple of Harley's a while back and yeah, that world certainly has its share of posers. That kind of person is always looking for someone to dislike for whatever reason. I've had Goldwings too, and most of those guys couldn't understand why I bought one naked and just had a small half fairing on it as opposed to full boat Aspencade. I couldn't ride with those guys, all they wanted to do was freeway. Its always amusing to watch people think anything they can to make themselves feel like they're better than others. Hey, we're just lucky some elitist government drone has'nt managed to figure out a way to ban all bikes cause they're just tooo dangerous. But we're too many , and we'll fight 'em!

They are busy doing an "Instrument Scan". It takes a while to make sure everything is working: All the lights, GPS, cell phone, coffee maker, cruise control, gear indicator, microwave, radar detector, etc. Don't worry about the tach, speedo, gas, oil, etc. since they are covered up by the "Important" items.

Most everyone around here will wave. The worst offenders are the scooter people and i think they are just insecure and aren't sure if they are part of the 2-wheel world or not. Come to that, I'm not sure either. Most Harley guys will wave, most Wing guys will wave. There are a few who won't but I think they are just busy checking their reflection in their mirrors to make sure their do-rag is hanging out from under their beenie helmet properly.

    But I don't stereotype people, no sir-ree.

I was on a loaner bike during my Texas trip... Nobody waves there. I finally gave up after about a 98% failure rate.

    WTF?
