On my 5th gen, it just loves to cruise at 6k, smooth as silk with a devilish sound.

I will cruise at 4500 minimum,I prefer it above 6k. if I need to change speed slightly no worries. If I need to accelerate I down shift, if I’m passing I will take 2 gears to get above 5500 for full throttle. I have hit the rev-limiter a couple of times, I guess I'm getting used to it and am looking for more. I came to this decision because of Toe and when accelerating under 5k the bike would sort of "chunk", not smooth, but would smooth out above 5k. So that is why I decided to limit my non acceleration cruise to 4500 to 5500. I do lower in the city but I'm in a lower gear and it doesn't require the torque of a higher gear. I guess I'm saying that the bike will tell you in any gear that it's not happy.

Glad to see you and mud are doing well, miss you guys and hope to see you more this spring.

I had a near-miss with a falling tree that would have taken me out but for I was in the rev range of the engine in the right gear at precisely the right time so when I grabbed all the throttle I could, my '96 leapt forward like it should. It seems unsafe to me now to ride along in anything but the gear and revs where you have nearly instant full accelleration available if you need it, usually at least 4500-5000rpm. I've bounced against the rev limiter several times, but this bike is a hoot revving out at 9-10K :^)
