In less than one year I'll be 80 and I'm still riding. I see no reason to stop.

    Actually, I cheated a bit.

I live in Albuquerque, NM. In 2009, when I was only 71, I took a trip on my VFR to Savannah, Georgia. On the way back, I rode the Tail of the Dragon. After scraping a peg a couple times, I decided to slow down a bit. At age 73, I rode to San Antonio, TX, to see the Alamo. At age 75, I realized that I was riding the VFR only for long trips because I found it easier and more convenient to use my Suzuki SV 650 around town. Because I wasn't using the VFR very much, the insurance company was making out like a bandit. So, I decided to see whether my Suzuki would be suitable for touring. I fitted it with a windscreen and hard luggage (I'd already fitted it with a center stand) and at age 75, used it to take a trip to San Diego, a distance of about 850 miles from ABQ. It wasn't quite so nice for touring as the VFR, but it was OK. So, I sold the VFR and now have only the Suzuki.

Since then I haven't taken any really long trips, but I could and perhaps I will. I may keep riding both a bicycle and a motorcycle for quite some time.

Now, as to why I can do some things at age 79.4 that most people my age cannot do, I've always been a physical fitness nut. I had to stop running, unfortunately, but recently I walked more than 8 miles quite easily and could have gone much farther. I do intervals on my bicycle and can easily ride more than 25 miles even when the temperature is > 95F. Working out in a gym also helps. I see people far younger than I who, instead of walking, just shuffle along and probably could not walk even one mile. I understand that throwing a leg over a motorcycle is impossible for some older guys, but at least in many cases that problem could be reduced by exercises to improve strength and flexibility and by losing weight. Of course abilities will decline with age, but the decline can be greatly reduced with diet and exercise.

As I see it, I am reaping the benefits of keeping myself physically fit by diet and exercise. I hope that I can influence others to do the same.

If this site permitted it, I'd post a physique photo of myself in addition to the avatar. Perhaps I'm a bit naughty, but I would like to be able to inspire other guys to get fit!

Thanks for the encouragement FRE, I am hoping that I can make it 7 more years to 80 too, but certainly not a fit as you are. Your are correct in maintaining your fitness, which is my big weakness. Hopefully the degenerative disk and arthritis in my neck won't to get too much worse, kind of limits my time in the saddle at the moment.

Although we have considerable control over how we age, we do not have complete control. I.e., some things are beyond our control, but I figure we might as well exercise the control we do have. It is possible, but not guaranteed, that a physical therapist could help with your neck problems. I've had to do exercises to control joint and back problems and if I stop doing the exercises, the problems recur. My neck is somewhat stiff and that influences the way I ride and drive because I cannot turn my neck as far as I used to be able to. Positioning the bike and the car a bit differently helps to compensate. Sometimes we have to make adjustments.

Incidentally, I learned to ride a motorcycle when I was 67. I'm sure some people thought that I was crazy.

By all means keep trying since there is nothing to lose by trying.

Three fusions and a disk replacement hasn't slowed me one bit. HUGE thing my PT told me after my recovery was stretching every day is so important.
Don't use it ya lose it in mobility

I've been to PT and that helped. I don't plan on stopping riding, I still have my '83 to enjoy, but worried about the effects of aging on riding at full bore on the '14, I just tend to ride it to my limit all the time!

I'm 54, though I did need to put Convertibar raised handlebars to make the bike comfortable enough for me. My friend is 64 and he's got 109,000 miles on his 98 VFR. It's doable for sure.

I am only 69 years old, but I bet that I am the only rider who has been treated for Stage 4 cancer with bi-weekly chemo for the past 15 months. No intention of giving up riding as long as can I have the strength. My only regret the 2007 VFR resides in Florida.... 90 minutes to decent road!

Well you got me on the cancer but I bet 8m likely the only one over 50 to go through 3 accidents, 3 bikes, a broken ankle, broken shoulder and broken all within 3 years and still keep riding //cloud.tapatalk.com/s/5b9063e915f01/VID-20170603-WA0000.mp4

Now are we talking 1.-mental age, 2-physical age or 3-astronomical age? :Violin:
    1. 18-25 (keeps me over coming #2)
    2. 70-78 (Damage done without injuries on the bike)
    3. 51 (My mother says so)
