All the Gear, All the time

I have gathered from reading here and elsewhere that full gear is really the only way to go. I wear a Joe Rocket Meteor 5.0 jacket, red, for my commute. I wear a Cortech perforated Coaster Air (full armor) jacket for track, canyon and "social" riding. I use Cortech perforated leather pants (full armor), armored gloves (most times "shorts", gauntlets for the track) and full face Shoei X-11 helmet. I don't have "proper" boots yet, but I wear all leather lace up Mil-spec boots. I do occasionally wear jeans if I am running nearby or am not going to push it. I admit I feel more comfortable in the jeans but less confident....

I wear ATGATT. My son wears ATGATT. The one time he was just going to the corner gas station, (July 14, 2009) he wore no gear not even a helmet. He hit a pedestrian who ran out into the street. 15mph. (pedestrian was ticketed for jaywalking). Broken collarbone required surgery, broken bone in hand, roadrash on face elbow and back. $20K for hospital, emergency room, tests etc. $18K for surgery. BC/BS negotiated bill down to $18K for all. My out of pocket less than $3K. Progressive paid $5,800 for bike, they wanted to total but they said I could keep it if I would make no further claims once I started to rebuild. Needed just plastic and small amount of parts.

Bottom line WEAR THE GEAR! My son says he will not walk out to the garage now without full gear.

Every time I'm going to "just go to the store around the corner" I am reluctant to go through the hassle of dressing full ATGATT. Then one of the little voices in my head says, "hey, dumbass, this is the one time you're going to go down". So I dress full ATGATT. With my luck, the one time I don't I know I'll regret it.

Many think riding a motorcycle is hassle-free. But we know there's a lot that should go into the ride preparation (check tire pressure, lights, and chain tension; lube the chain; etc., plus dress ATGATT). All this takes a lot more time than just jumping in a cage and taking off. That may be one of the main reasons you see so many riders without ATGATT (there are other reasons, too).
