Now that we have all that settled, how should the bike be when checking tire pressure? Hot? Cold? On the centerstand? Having a 400lb bud or GF sitting on it? Topcase an panniers full of beer or tropical fish from WalMart?

Kinda late coming in with all the spin going on in this post, but cant resist......

-To find out if you have the chops to perform the simple motorcycle maintenance checks first you need to find out that you can pass a basic human coordination test. To do the test, first you stand up straight with your feet a bit wider than shoulder width. Then take your left hand and put it on your hip. Next with your right hand bend over and reach out and touch the ground and you will be somewhat in a crouch. If you need the left hand for balance you can do that. Then finally kick you right leg back. Got that going? Now bark. Yeah, bark. Then do it again. .......Congrats you pass.

Wow, that's good to know. I wish I had seen your post earlier, but it got buried under all this other nonsense.

BTW, my bikes oil level was about 10mm above the upper mark when I got it. I thought maybe the previous owner was compensating for the lack of a center stand. I think this is where I was overthinking it. I should have just assumed he put too much oil in and was then too lazy to drain a little out.

Would checking the pressure once a year be enough?

Are you asking me? I'd recommend you follow the owners manual.

Me personally, I check it with a gauge about once a month, but check it by hand every time I ride.

Yes, I was asking. It's about time someone said something about all this nonsense. Good for you. I will be sacrificing a live chicken in your honor as soon as the sun rises and we will have fried chicken tonite and God willing some Jo-jo's.
