Now lets go back to Squirrels suggestion to do a compression test on it before you throw any money at it, one step at a time

No problem Gavin. Just so you know, that reference had nothing to do with you. I was just poking fun at Duccmanns yanky reference, it's a funny line that the Chinese actor's character "Long Duck Dong" from the movie Sixteen Candles fraised after his girlfriend has had her way with him all night.
An FYI, it isn't only a mans club here, there is a good amount of female members also. Now, as the others mentioned, back to the issues with your bike. Let's get it rolling!
    John

Ya your telling me I have had this thing for going on four years was scared to tackle the carb issue myself and couldn't find a shade tree worth a craps so it just sat there neglected .I recently got a 250 ninja that ive been going through doing a bit of work on and riding and it is definitely caused the vfr to be on my mind .I cant stand that little bike too slow too small im way too big to be on that little bike you guys should see it must be hilarious for those around I am not a small guy but it is what it is (all I have at the moment and it runs great ) so cant complain but ya. I had forgotten how fun riding can be AnD now I got the itch bad .want to get on a real bike again and been thinking about that bike for years now so I finally decided screw it im gonna do it tear her down get her back right and learn alot on the way so nervous and excited about it . Previous lessons on my other bikes and cars have always cost me money breaking stuff while attempting to fix problems creating more for myself .it has taught me alot though I have wrenched on everything I have ever owned but this time I figured you guys might stop from making more costly mistakes along the way well thats they're anyways so well see ill keep you guys updated along the way and when completed will definitely have some things to say and show you guys so bare with me money is tight and experience is low but ill get it

Thats what I was hoping to find here so thank you guys I wont even think about doing this for real without you guys support. So i will post some new pics on here soon I broke down and cleaned the bike up surprised me how nice it actually cleaned up . So feeling optimistic at the moment but kind of at a stand still need to get the parts I need before I take it down . Im not the most organized person so dont want to have it apart for any longer than necessary . So acquiring parts at the moment so i have everything I need when I break her down that way I can tear her apart clean fix mend and make new then reassemble hopefully in a week from when i start to tear it down but am open to suggestions for the process so im all ears if you guys got a better idea

OK, Gav, and to answer your question about compression readings, i'd suggest that on your COLD engine--with all plugs removed and a strong battery and carbs off the bike or throttle held wide open--you'd see about 120psi + at least with a healthy engine. It's uber-important that all 4 should be within about 10% equal. Any cylinder much below average is a problem.

So if you are going to do a compression check, after you have done the first check, squirt a bit of oil in through the plug hole and repeat the test and then we can compare the readings and see if there is an issue with either rings or valves

If you find yourself in the Sacramento area this holiday season I will slap those carbs back together for ya if all the parts are there.

Well I might just have to find my way up there I think parts are missing though are any other years interchangeable with the 86 I found some complete carbs for an 87 and an 86 700 would either of those work for my bike
