Maybe I need to make my view on this subject a little more clear. Lets take the rights thing a step further... Like back to natural selection. If you are dumb enough to ride without a helmet, then you are a fool who deserves his fate (and much increased likelihood of death by collision with inanimate object). But I still don't want someone telling me I have to wear one because they said so.

I like your idea of being a vocal advocate for ATGATT. I've already made some progress where I work with a guy who has never worn any gear of any kind ever in his entire life, other than a near-useless brain bucket.

He'd see me arrive in the morning all 100% ATGATT. The first few times he just made fun of me, but I wasn't having any of it. As time went by, he started talking to me and asking me questions. We got through the "it's too hot", "it's too uncomfortable", "I don't feel free", "it's not cool" issues the first few discussions.

In later discussions we talked about the things I never want to go through, or have my family and friends go through, such as an untimely death, brain damage and being a vegetable (even though my wife says I'm pretty close already), parralysis, massive skin grafts, impotence (his ears really perked up with this far-fetched notion, though a possibility - I did do a job on my nut sack once long ago when I accidently downshifted into first from third and slammed my pelvis hard into the bars - and, no, I don't know how anyone could ever do something that stupid, but I found a way), loss of income, gigantic medical bills, etc. etc. I referred him to the Road Rash Queen site and a few others.

Last Thursday he stopped by my office and asked me where I got my pants and jacket, what kind of protection they afforded, and what they cost. I showed him my gear inside and out, and had him try it on. Now, he's actually going to buy some gear! I told him he was welcome to borrow some of mine until his is delivered.

So to make a long story short (too late, I know), speaking out forcefully and knowledgibly does work, at least sometimes. Even just once is worth the effort. So, thank you KC-10 FE. "Pay it forward" is the way to go!

I do agree with the eye protection law here. above 35 you are required to wear eye protection.

This makes sense to me, above a certain speed wind and objects can have quite an effect on your vision and can cause a crash. No helmet cannot cause a crash the way no goggles can.

Arizona requires eye protection for anything without a windshield. And they mean windshield as in a car. It has to have a frame around it. This is a law I agree with. The guy that catches the beetle in the eye, momentarily loses vision, and swerves into you is a public danger.

For me I enjoy wearing a full face helmet and did so even when I had my cruiser regardless of what others said. I also teach MSF and recently had a student who went down very hard at all of 15-20 MPH...the ONLY scuff on his helmet was direct center of the chin bar. Had he not been wearing a full face helmet, he would have had seriously fractured his jaw as well as the broken wrist he sustained.

I am torn about mandatory helmet laws.....with out the law it is like putting chlorine in the gene pool and that is needed but think about the emergency persons who have to clean up the mess and what they have to go through.

    Where is this "statistic" from?

There is anything & everything. To only use a single company as an example, look at Joe Rocket. They are not the best. They are not the worst. They do represent an excellent value & they make EVERYTHING. Helmets, jackets, pants, boots, gloves, leather, textile, etc. I have two JR leather jackets (1 is for sale) & 3 pairs of their gloves.

This is list of the stuff I have from the following companies, Olympia, Joe Rocket, TourMaster, Cortech, Icon, Sidi, Polo (German Company only sold in Germany), Alpinestars, Arai:
    1 Hot Weather Riding Suit
    5 Jackets, 2 Leather & 3 Textile
    4 Pants, 1 Leather & 3 Textile
    11 Pairs of Gloves, 5 Leather & 6 Textile
    2 Helmets
    1 Neck Gaiter
1 Pair of Motorcycle Specific Boots

There is something for everyone, for every season, for every budget. There is NO EXCUSE whatsoever for not wearing your gear, ever.

    KC-10 FE out...
