MCN (british motorcycle newspaper) exposed that the testing involved in the european helmet certification was essentially flawed, they claimed that the pressure point tests performed on the helmets were tested in specific area's....that the helmet manufacturers new about, so strenghen those area's and that part of the test is easy. googling this subject reveals some shocking money saving claims. this changed my mind regarding the european standards.

I don't think too many people who are buying novelty helmets really think they are buying the best in helmet technology. Anyone I have ever spoken to about it, was aware, but didn't care. Or thought the "look" was worth it.

I don't beleive new enough ever sold used helmets, so they haven't changed that policy. In fact I am virtually positive they never did. They did however sell used jackets, pants, one piece suits; any brand, they would also buy new stuff on close out and overstocks to sell cheap. EBay really knocked their used market out, so they went to the new stuff only. They still do a lot of overstock and close out purchases, and sometimes have really really good prices on new stuff. Having dealt with them personally for a number of years, plus recomended them to friends and co-workers, I can also vouch for their high lever of customer service.

Keep in mind that while the construction obviously plays a major role in how noisy a helmet is, the shape and fit of the helmet is also very important. If the shape leaves gaps around your particular head, you would likely find the lid noisier. Also, if you bought a helmet a size too large (usually they are pretty tight when new) and now because of break in, it is too big for you, you will also find it noisier.

Spike << started with no helmet, then some cheapo half unit (but DOT), then cheapo full face, then to Shoei, then to Arai for a long time, recently went to Schuberth

And their research credentials, criteria and method of testing was exactly what?

And, don't they have airbags on their bikes?

OK, so let me get this straight.
    1) You had a helmet from a company that had a, what I would call, major structual failure in an accident you had?
    2) You were so impressed by this, that you replaced said helmet with one of similar design, by the same company?
    3) But, the new helmet impresses you because it is even cheaper than the one that failed in your previous accident?

Oh, yeah, I'll be taking safety advice from you.

Me, I take price pretty much out of the equation when looking at safety gear, particuarly the helmet I wear. The rest of me isn't much good, without a functioning head. Not that I thing the most expensive is always the best, but the price is way down low on my criteria.

And wouldn't that read as a helmet for more than $300 ? Since the helmet part of your sentence is at the larger side? Which I don't think is what you meant.

But again, you are (I beleive) touting the great value of these helmets under $300 (and I am not saying no helmet under $300 is any good, just trying to follow the reasoning here). anyway, these helmets that failed the most important testing of all, most would argue, an actual real world accident. You talk about 3 helmets, and mention two of them were in accidents. In both of those cases you mention the chin bar failing. I am no ER doctor, but I gotta say, that isn't good!

OK, not to be a @$$, but really -- "professional writting." Isnt' that kind of a stretch? We are talking, at least what you mentioned, two rather obscure "periodicals." When you are Dr. Hurt, then I will listen to you.

No but you haven't offered here in this post any indication of any serious, personal large scale testing of helmets, nor the qualifications to even conduct such testing.
In fact, you seem to recommend that people wear a helmet that failed you in an actual crash. That doesn't really make much sense.

I'm not going to get involved in the arguing (it does sound like fun though) so I'll just say this:

BUY WHATEVER HELMET FITS YOUR FREAKING HEAD THE BEST!!! Who gives a rat behind if it costs $20 or $700? If it fits & it's rated/genuine/certified what difference does it make if it cost's $150. One overall point that most people missed in the Motorcyclist Magazine article is there really isn't a BAD certified helmet. All of them will protect you, some just do a better job.

I paid $580 for my current Arai, my wife's was $380. Why did we pick them? Nothing, & I do mean NOTHING, fits my sputnik better than an Arai RX7. I was this close to buying a Shoei X11, the Bostrom model. It fit me slightly better than my 5.5 year old Quantum & it was on sale. The sales squid noticed I came in wearing an Arai & said he would give me any RX7 for the same price. I can't believe I wore my Quantum as long as I did, the RX7 fits that much better.

For my wife's helmet, I told her we would buy anything she wanted as long as it was a genuine helmet & not some novelty piece of junk. She wanted to buy an Arai Quantum just because that's what I was wearing at the time. Her head is nowhere near the same shape as mine so I MADE her (you read that correctly, I basically forced her to try on helmets) try on almost 20 helmets. After the smoke cleared, she felt the Arai Astral fit her best and was the most comfortable so that's what she went with.

There are probably close to 40 shell forms to choose from. Buying a helmet should NEVER be done over the internet unless you've gone to a shop and tried it on. When you do try one on, keep it on for AT LEAST 30 minutes. Ignore the sales monkey and simply wear the freaking thing. Walk out the door with the one that fits you best. There made be one with a snappy graphics scheme you really, really want but unless it fits, whats the point? I wanted this Suomy helmet & wanted it really bad based soley on looks. This is without a doubt the coolest looking helmet I've ever seen. It flat out did not fit. Even though the sales squid was going to give it away for $400, it would have been a waste of money for me. My RX7 isn't as eye catching but it fits, works & I love it.

Of you survive, it's not a failure.

The face plate was broken off, not my jaw. I consider that a success. If you hit the ground real hard with any helmet, there will be damage. If you can get up and walk off,...you won.

The GWRA rated the helmet, not me. I could truly give a shit about their criteria. Gold Wing folks tend to take their gear pretty seriously (and DOT cert.). That's good enough for me.

Our obscure magazine reaches over 200,000 folks in 17 states, Full Throttle is around 300,000 in about 25 states.. My writing covers national and local mags over 30 years.Yours'? It's not the only things that I have written, just the most recent... Junior.

My truly professional writing exists outside the realm of motorcycles. Industrial and tech writing tends to actually earn a paycheck. Pretty boring unless you're directly involved with that particular dislipline.

It looks like you use the Rush Limbaugh/ Bob Riley line of reasoning. (ie, If I say it it must be true). This is a post. If you're looking for hardcore data. Send me a check.

Other than your hot air, I haven't seen any evidence of your extensive testing accomplishments... or am I missing something.

The new CL -Max impresses me due to it's improvements and quiteness. Manufacturing economy tends to bring improvements and sometimes lower cost (those 30 years of manufacturing experience acting up again).

Every post that I have made to this forum were simply discussions that you shouldn't buy bogus helmets, counterfit helmets, or used helmets. I was confused that newenough did not sell used as my only experience with them was a friend buying used Vanson from them. So what's your point?

Is it because I called you a Dweeb? The evidence seems to confirm that assumption.

RW, How do you like your X11?....
That's what I really would like, but I have to buy my son a replacement for the latest helmet that he destroyed first.

Disregard price and concentrate on fit to a certain extent, you want to make sure it is DOT, SNELL, ECE, or whichever standard you think is best.

Yeah, my then GF now wife was going to get the Arai that I had at the time. Because she knew I looked and researched such purchases pretty heavily, but I made her try on others, but limited it to the major brands. We eventually got her a Shoei, 'cause it fit her head shape better.

I think another BIG part of the Motorcyclist article was that the standards are different, and that we should think about what is most important to us in purchasing. After reading the article, I came away thinking it was much more important to me to meet the ECE standard than the DOT one.
There was a pretty big difference in the amount of the energy transmited to the head mold in the different helmets.

Yeah, I liked the Suomy Carbon Fiber one, but didn't like their test results (although the carbon fiber version was not in the Motorcyclist testing). It was pretty though. Schuburth makes my helmet in a carbon fiber version, but it is HUGE dollars, I want to say when I did the conversion, it worked out to like $1,200. But I looked for it anyway, even called the US distrubuter eventually, to find a dealer, they didn't import it, due to predicted limited sales. They didn't even import the color scheme I liked in the helmet I wanted and would not do custom orders. Thought about ordering overseas and having it shipped, but decided against it, to much hassle.

If the lower jaw piece breaks off, my thought is that it leaves the wearer suceptible to serious damage on the second, third, fourth, etc. potential impacts -- which can still be very severe. Certainly severe enough that I, and I would guess most riders would still want that chin bar in place. Yes there will be damage to the helmet, but I want the thing in one piece, and able to offer protection in any subsequent impacts - even if the protection might be more limited than on the first one. If in the two examples you cited, there was no second impact to the face area great, or at least impact after the chin bar broke off. But I can't beleive you would say that such an impact is impossible. I have seen film of some falls that have some tumbling associated with it, I don't want to do that with no chin bar in place if I can avoid it.

I specifically mentioned that the "wing dings" tested it, not you. How can you not care about their criteria and promote their findings? You, or others may find that their criteria isn't applicable to your case, or that you just don't have confidence in it, or that they just replicated the DOT test or any one of a several scenarios that would make their findings useless to someone.

Never once mentioned my personal writtings, you did, that is the difference. I think it was pretty clear you offered that up to support your arguments, in so doing you open it up to question.

Junior? well at least we are sticking to the argument and sound reasoning there Pops.

and are those circulation numbers of an actual mag, or hits to a website?

And I still don't see, regardless of the number of subscribers/readers, anything about any sort of large scale testing of the helmets. Just saying something is published doesn't make it valid. Several of the mags do helmet comparos, and just pay no attention to the protection aspect of it. They just leave that to DOT and SNELL, and just compare fit, finish, build quality, etc.

OK, so you get published in technical journals of some sort, great. Again, why does that give you any authority to comment on the safety aspect of motorcycle helmets? After all, that is what we are supposed to be talking about here. Your ability to comment authorativly in other fields isn't really germaine, unless the field could be tied in somehow.

Never said "because I say it, it must be true" not even once. I never even offered a particular recomendation. Nor did I mention doing any testing. I did however seriously question your standing to offer one. However, you are pretty clearly saying "because I wrote it, and it got published, it must be true." Again, without pointing to any particular testing or methodology. Just "I am published, and I have published other things, so it must be solid."

If you are going to offer yourself up as an authority, you should be willing and prepared to offer proof of why you should be listned to. Particuarly when it comes to something as important as safety gear.

This is a post, not an oracle.

I get hate mail and threats every day because some dweeb does'nt agree or like an opinion that I have published.I've already had several wits tell me how wrong I am for saying that you have the right to ride the bike of your choosing. www.thunderroadsalabama.com (Legs at Large Oct. issue). This article was not syndicated to the California Thunder Roads.

I really don't give a damn if you hold any of my rantings as gospel or not. But when I tried to stop writing, letters to editors convinced ThunderRoads- Al/FL that they wanted me to do a monthly column- Legs-at-Large. I hope to bring in readers who are not cruiser oriented.I'm not sure how many website hits we get, but 200,000 mags are distributed in 17 states every month, in all kinds of shops. I quit writing for Full Throttle because they were too faux-Harley oriented. They probably distribute over 300,000 per month. Free mags tend to get more than one reader per issue according to the advertising folk. The reason that I haven't pursued full time writing gig is that the money is somewhat less than I am accustomed to.

I do not pretend to be an expert on helmet selection, but when I was in China and an exporter showed me realitively good looking full-face knock-off at $5 USD in container lots, I realized that we would see this crap in the US soon. Probably in the West Coast sooner than the SE. My point was and is to buy decent certified gear. I have actually got a death threat for saying the same in FullThrottle.

Tomorrow my last day at Webb-Stiles, an Industrial Engineering firm. My last act is to finish an engineering report as to why the company that manufactures seat for an automotive mfg. is having production problems. This report is costing the client quite a bit. (Not bad for a hillbilly from Alabama). I'll be selling Harleys and playing with several underground mags. Motorcyclist showed great editorial balls with their helmet report, but they are in the minority. Advertising money talks.. I was told to write a good review on the Indian Powerplus engine for a magazine. When I refused, I was told never to darken their door again! There are several good underground bike mags cominging out, including a couple in SF Bay area. They will bring new life to the motorcycle mag world.

So forgive me if I don't justify my self to you. It's just a post. If you don't like what I post, don't read it!

The large ego has served me well!

The large ego has served me well. I have found that it protects me from having to deal with too many lightweights.

I;however, don't get how stating that cheap helmets that are not certified, or used helmets shouldn't be bought is a bad thing. I have only discussed that I write for a few moto mags in response to questions. The original poster and I e-mailed off forum when I misunderstood that he was not advocating used helmets.

You have mistaken me for someone who gives a damn about your impression of me.

I don't know yet, just won it on E-Bay today for $400.00 with the tinted shield, It was bought for a girlfriend who refused to ride on the back of a GSXR 600, so it has never been used. But I love the X11 and have already tried it on for 10 minutes at Cyclegear and knew I had to have one...
