defector - have you considered a Super Hawk? They are slightly cheaper than an equivalent VFR in my 'hood.

I'd probably go with low miles, but it's hard to say without looking at both. Riding a VFR definitely doesn't hurt it. I really like those Triumphs also. They have a lot of personality. I think the difference between that and the VFR is in fit/finish. Read reviews and see what you think. Any time the two have been compared that I have read, the VFR comes out on top. That's not me comparing, just what I have seen in magazines on the rare occasion the VFR makes it to print. But if you ride the Triumph and like it, definitely go for it. I think you'd be pleased with any of those bikes. I myself used to ride a Seca 2 and while it's a fun commuter bike, it lacks a lot when you hit the highway.

The VFR is definitely nicer to work on than the Triumph was. Everything is better thought out and things like the fasteners, wire routing and attention to detail are definitely consistently a bit nicer on the Honda. They're not things that you'd notice from 5 ft. away, and if you aren't looking (or wrenching) you might not notice at all. It's not that the Triumph is a bad bike and it isn't poorly put together by any means. The ephemeral 'fit and finish' people talk about with Honda's it true, though.

At the same time, the Triumph is a better value, IMO. VFR's are expensive, while the inline-4 Triumphs didn't hold their value nearly as well, mostly because they were sort of the red-headed stepchild of the family.

A more apples to apples comparison would be a CBR600-F4i <-> Daytona 600 or a slightly older Triumph Sprint <-> VFR...
