I've been in similar situation where a couple of riders just 'disappeared' and the rest of us spent ages looking for them thinking the worst has happened. Most of the time though everyone knows the drill; those I ride with regularly go at their own pace (we are a mixed group of makes). But, if I invite someone new along then I make sure I stick with them, particularly if they are a bit inexperienced (seeing as I invited them along).
I have been on some great big rides run by our local MRA (Motorcycle Riders Association). Well organised, but relaxed, with everyone self selecting their level of speed, etc. Had no problems and thoroughly enjoyed them. Even 'Coffee Runs' organised by our local police are enjoyable too (although not ones you can take off from the bunch at high speed - for some strange reason!).

This is a pretty interesting thread. Before moving to Midland I lived in Longview TX... there are plenty of twisties there and plenty of sportbikers. I My case I hooked up with a regular crew of 8 guys all of about the same riding skill....... (all fairly fast). Whenever we would go out for a ride there would always be another group that would tag along untill the rodes got good and then they would cut off and go back to town. At 1st this really bothered me because I felt like I had to make sure everyone made it to the next point. After a few weekend of this our group decided that we would look out for each other. If one of our regulars didnt show up at the next stop then we would go back and look. I am all for people riding their own ride and arriving alive but I rid for fun.... not so that I can baby sit.
Personally if I were riding in a group that felt the need to elect a leader I think I would go home or ride alone 1st.
