96 VFR750. The heat shield pad under the tank is deteriorating and the yellow fiberglass "dust" is getting everywhere. Is this pad necessary or is there some other material I can use instead of the stock? OEM is $100 at dealer and $75 online.

Egads, don't buy a new OE one for that $.
I suspect that pad is just as much for sound proofing than anything else.
Find any suitable size soft rubber pad or similar material and replace it if you feel you need something in there.
My RC51 uses rubber layers that stick on the side of the airbox itself, which may be easier for you to install it that way.
