Should my 1986 vfr 750 v4 always have the fuel pump pumping?

As i see it has a piece of wire from a relay which is 3 wires with power in the centre and bridged to another.

Is this safe to have the pumping always going with the ignition on?

    Many thanks

Take the bridge out, there should be a red plug from the fuel pump that plugs into the fuel relay and the yellow wire conects to the yellow wire.

Someone who didn't want to replace the failed pump relay used a jumper wire to send power to the pump, which many owners do. Not really unsafe since the key switch cuts power.

But if your pump clicks constantly and never stops, then you have problem, and my guess would be a partially blocked filter or petcock.

Turn petcock to OFF, then remove line to pump (with filter attached). Direct fuel into a can, and switch to ON or RESERVE.
There should be a strong, full flow, not a trickle or weak stream.
If flow is poor remove filter and try again.
