undo the spring retainers, unbolt cans, slide them off the mid/link pipes, slip in the conical decibel killers, put it all back together - Probably a 10 minute job... As for heat, my much fairer other half has had no complaints regarding heat, not even on her hands as she uses the grab handles which are right above the cans...
