Do you use automotive oil in your bike? I just turned 320 miles on my new '14 Interceptor, so I did an oil change this weekend. When I went to the Honda dealer for a new filter, I asked him if there was any difference between automotive oil and motorcycle oil. He said to make sure to use motorcycle oil and look for the SJ rating whatever that means. So I walked away with a gallon of 10w/30 SJ, and completed the oil change. My question is whether there is really a difference between automotive oil and motorcycle oil. According to MCN, there is no difference. http://www.motorcyclenews.com/news/2008/august/bike-oil-rip-off/

I was wondering if others had an opinion.

If I remember correctly...auto oil is labeled energy conserving, it has stuff in it that is not compatible with the clutch/trans in a motocycle...slippage? Motorcycle oil does double duty there. True or false?

Yes there is, you do NOT want to use any oil or additives with friction modifiers, which are bad for clutches.

The "energy conserving" rating relates to low viscosity as it is easier to pump and saves gas. But it is not the concise indicator of friction modifiers. EC oils do have friction modifiers which slip the wet clutch. Heavier viscosities of the identical oils also contain friction modifiers, but are not labelled EC because of their higher viscosity. All of these are to be avoided.

Some people do use Mobil 1 15W50 for example which is not EC due to the high viscosity. From what I have read it has small amounts of friction modifiers, but apparently so little that the users do not see any problem over the life of their bike. (Buyer beware.)

However it is wisest to use a JASO rated motorcycle oil, which is a concise indicator of having no friction modifiers. The JASO ratings supersede the old API SF/SG rating in our manuals.

Knight talking even more shit.. He pays a dude to change his oil on his first bike, looks up a convenient answer to questions and re-writes them like he knows his stuff. Paper shuffler..

Is there a specific reason you are so consistently uncivil, or is it simply a matter of how you were made?

Some of the other dudes here will want to see a pic of your new VFR. Good that you got off those "other" message boards. Were they boring? This one ain't.

If you are really doing some kind of profiling or psychological analysis, Check oot the "I hate Harleys" pages. This could prove a field day if you are qualified.

Had me VFR for 25 years, so there..

The 1st Amendment does not apply on message boards. Your qualifications appear limited to talking smack and attention-whoring. I suspect you don't even ride, given the volume of drivel you post here.
