I am certainly glad to be here. I am a novice mind you, doing all the right things, and all of my "friends" either make fun of me or just portray me as screwy for wearing full gear. Also I see so many on the road with no protection whatsoever, many bikers not doing any maintenance or pre-ride checks, and plenty who do not even know how the bike steers.

So it is nice to belong to a club of some intelligence where many of these things are a given. I had a feeling about this crowd, but now I know empirically. :)

Ya Knight learned along time ago to not listen or even care what bonehead friends think. Always listen to people with tons of experience and how not to adopt dumb ass habits.
Glad your listening and takin notes. Besides ear plugs..always check your tires...pre trip inspection only takes a few minutes and can save alot of headaches.trust me.

My Shoei X12 has a lot of wind noise, great ventilation but aweful loud. Going to start wearing foamies even on the short trips. Wear them on longer trips but I think the cumulative damage from lots of shorter rides might do some damage.

I know we as a whole are kinda laid back here at VFRW. Except me of course. I am no nonsense. But there is good natured fun most of the time, and sound advice (no pun intended) and varyong points of view here. Long as they are the same as mine, they are quite correct.

Totally agree. Thats what I have and will likely get another when time comes. Great airflow whic also means water does seep in there too.

Yes even with the vents closed a little water gets in a heavy rain. I don't ride in the rain that much though.

THIS. I've lost a significant amount of my high frequency hearing due to exposure to drums, loud music, small engines, aircraft/jet noise, gunfire, etc. in my younger years. At 53, I don't want to lose any more than I already have. DON'T BE SORRY LATER!

    1. Yep
    2. Cheap foam ones from Wal-Mart along with some green plastic ones on a cord. I prefer the plastic ones as they are easier to get in and out.
    3. I try remember to use them every time I ride but forget sometimes. I never forget them on a long trip. I like the quiet.
    4. Yes

I have pretty server left ear hearing loss. I think this is from years or riding around in cars with the driver side window down (an possibly playing loud rock and roll.)

    53? You're ancient.
It's good people are noting the cumulative affects of assaults to our hearing- like Van Halen.

You're just grumpy because you're about to enter another decade.

I have a big box of earplugs at work. I'll pilfer a pair for a ride on Sunday, it's supposed to be nice.

Never wear ear plugs. I have tried once or twice, but felt totally disconnected. It was actually quite unnerving. Not knocking it, just couldn't get it to work for me.
Something interesting about that graph though. Even if we take 94db, I'm sure most of us don't spend an hour on our bikes every day. Edit - Apparently noise levels at 120Km/h can be as much as 116db which is a different matter altogether.

I spent 14 years listening to screaming jets. I always wore ear muffs. Bike is pretty quiet compared to the jets. I don't wear ear plugs on the bike but I think I will try it next time out just to see.

I wear them all the time, foam disposible types, sometimes I wash them, sometimes the boston terrier eats them. I was amazed when I was working around locomotives, some of the old timers choosing not to wear any hearing protection. Hard hat envirnment, steel toe shoes, but they shurked their duty to protect their hearing. :loco:
