I don't disagree with what you said. It makes a lot of sense. My annoyance with corporate is their dismissive attitude. I just dropped $10k on a product and no one seems willing to help. "Nothing we can do, bye." If the guy had said, "Let me search the dealer network and see if I can turn up a set for you. I'll call you tomorrow.", I'd have been perfectly happy that an effort had been made.

Tone can certainly be implied in written message by the use of all caps, font size, font weight, punctuation, and emoticons. In the absence of those things I believe you need to read the words that are written in a calm and even [mental] tone. Doing otherwise is just dangerous and leads to misunderstanding and hurt feelings.

The other day I sent an email to a co-worker with a link to a technical article I'd found. Their response was, and I quote, "I'm well aware of the technique in that article." Would you say there was tone associated with that response? I think most people would. However, I know the person (obviously) and I know their communication style, and I know that's just how they talk and that no offense was implied or intended. Even the following...

... could be taken as sarcastic, joking, angry, dismissive... who knows? If I said that to a buddy with a smile on my face it would be very different than if I screamed it, frothing at the mouth, into the face of a stranger.

Y'know, I'd be happy if someone just gave me their word and lived up to it. I'm sick and tired of dealing with people and organizations that will lie up and down to get a deal/sale/contract. I deal with people in a very straight-up fashion and expect the same in return. When I sell something on eBay or craigslist (no relation) people are usually surprised because they got exactly what I described in the listing. There's very little honor anymore.

I had nothing to say in response to that particular post, so why would I quote it? It's an option, but not a particularly desirable one given that I had a set of soft luggage stolen off my bike several years ago. BTW, I see you're from Regina. I was born and raised there. Left in '86 after graduating from U of R.

To those of you who have provided support and/or additional advice, thank you. I will be visiting the dealer this weekend (again) to see if we can work anything out.

To those of you who think I'm just not cool enough to be in your club, all I can say is that I hope you never need assistance from someone else, or when you do and people tell you to just "go away" that you remember this moment. What goes around, comes around.

I'm new here, so am not familiar with local customs, but... what's wrong with posting on multiple forums? He wanted to vent. When I vent, I know that I want as many people as possible to hear.

He feels like he was mislead by his dealer, and that Honda doesn't care. If I felt that way, I'd be just as frustrated. You may not agree with how quickly (seemingly) he got frustrated, but you weren't there so you don't know what his dealer did, or didn't tell him.

By the way, I too just bought a red '07 VFR. I didn't buy the side bags, though. And after seeing Craig's topic here, I'm glad that I didn't because I have been known to get frustrated quickly too.

    Hey Craig,

As you know, Honda cannot control if a dealer promises you things that they might not be able to get. I think that customer service could have been nicer and maybe worked as a mediator if possible, but it really sounds like there is nothing that they could have done within reason....it is the dealer's gig.

My advice, sell the ole girl, and trade it in on a spankin' new Kawasaki Concours.....that baby comes stock with saddles, has more ponies, and more power. That is a nice bike.

Earlier this year I did a 1,500km trip over 3 days. I took one 35 litre Ventura gear bag. Since then I have bought a small Ventura bag that fits on the pillion part of the seat (I don't like tank bags) and have toured with the two bags.

I think you just want to carry too much stuff. Buy a cheap soft bag, pack it and get out there and enjooy the wonderful bike you have bought. It is the best bike I have ever owned especially for longer distance weekends or a week trip.
