And... speaking of instrumetals. Take five is definitely cool, but James Brown's arrangement on Night Train is one of the coolest things I have ever heard. Beethoven's 9th blows me away every time too.

Maybe not the coolest of all time, or maybe it is: More than Green Onions I always loved Time Is Tight.

I was riding into work the other morning in the fog / mist where you couldn't see more than a couple of 100 yards. Everything looked a bit surreal and as I was listening to an '80s mix suddenly Rammstein came through the speakers with their version of the Depeche Mode song "Stripped". It was actually a bit eerie sounding but also was the perfect song for the ride.
Coolest song of all time? probably not but pretty cool at that moment.

Tom Petty, George Harrison, Roy Orbison, Bob Dylan and Jeff Lynn. Lynn was by far the least recognizable other than probably his group ELO but he was amazing too. He played a lot of instruments, arranged, wrote music and lyrics and produced for the Beatles, Paul McCarthy, and Roy Orbison to name a few.

Another. Everybody needs somebody to lean on.

This is an easy one.

Black Sabbath - Supernaut

I want to reach out and touch the sky
I want to touch the sun
But I don't need to fly
I'm gonna climb up every mountain of the moon
And find the dish that ran away with the spoon

I've crossed the ocean, turned every bend
I found the crossing near a golden rainbow's end
I've been through magic and through life's reality
I've lived a thousand years and it never bothered me

Got no religion, don't need no friends
Got all I want and I don't need to pretend
Don't try to reach me, cause I'd tear up your mind
I've seen the future and I've left it behind

Really glad to see this thread resurrected, lot of great music being mentioned. I think I will have to agree with Green Onions beeing the "coolest" song though. That is always on my my phone for me to listen to on a ride. Another one that I think bears mentioning is this classic:

that singer has a lousey voice imo. More like a growl, not pleasant at all. Just more idiotic popular culture backed by the recording company's propaganda machine with the implication that you gotta be cool to like this junk.

Most of America's pop culture is vapid, mean, empty, idiotic, and fools just eat it up..........like football. :potstir:

Zeppelin is very funny. They inspired me, like many other teenage boys, to want to play great guitar solos. However, now I cannot stand to listen to much of their work. I am getting that way with the eagles as well. I think their resolve to copy others and make marketable songs (both groups) became apparent to me after many years and analyzing music with a much broader view than I did when young.

"recording company's propaganda"? lol, sorry man. That is probably the FURTHEST you can get from actuality. Clutch hasn't been on a major label in years, and there's a good reason they release their own stuff now. I honestly regard them as America's greatest active rock band.

as for the singer's voice, that's just one performance. Neil has never been sinatra or robert plant. But he has evolved over the years and he's known for writing some pretty involved lyrics.

They left the "growly" stuff as you put it behind after transitional speedway league way back in the early 90's. Their fanbase has grown from constant touring over the years and by word of mouth. They have never really enjoyed mainstream radio air time or platinum album sales.

Annoying voices can completely ruin a group. I am one of those, and I know there are many, that cannot listen to Rush merely because of Lee's voice. Jon Anderson of Yes as well, UGH, awful!

On the flip side, a good voice can make the world spin. Roger Daltry could sing Janet Jackon songs and I would be loving it.
