I'm waaaay far from a electrical guy, electricity is voodoo to me. But if I suspect a battery is going to toast, sometime I'll try to jump start the bike from my car. It may or may not be wise, but I've done it. Bike starts.....
    ....whoo hoo.....yada yada..

In exasperation I would contact this guy on the site --- Wire My Bike
He seems to be a VFR wiring guru.

    Good luck,

    MD

I actually ordered some wires / connectors from him last week, waiting for them to come in. After going over the whole bike, the one connectors that looked toasted, and not possible to clean, were the four going to the starter relay. If that's not it, I have two other things to try (from suggestions here and elsewhere) before I give up and go to the shop. It's been a great education about the bike, but I'm pretty sick of not riding.

OK my bike is doing the same thing. I went out and starting messing with the key, moving it to different positions, back and forth etc. Two or three times, it made the connection and all the dash lit up for like a second; enough for me to believe its the ignition switch as others have said. I ordered just the electics portion as apparantly you can order the whole thing with key and all or just the electrics; it appears when i finally get it off the bike (one bolt is a problem) that it comes apart.

Same symptoms. clock on, turn key clock goes off, everything else dead.
