A good thread on showing a bit of what it takes to dial in a vintage engine - experience, the right tools and patience.

Looking forward Slow to reading your thoughts on how the bike performs after you have it back in the stable.

Proper interpretation: He rode the s*#t out of your bike, and it works fine.

Good job on posting the info of what you where doing Squirrel. Reading between the lines. Shows what a small adjustment of the floats do and how critical they are to be adjusted to specs for a stock bike. Also what the plugs should generally look like if running properly. Does not account for though, as a proper A/F ratio check for performance tuning. That's a different type of plug check.

I assume you set the float height a little lower to lean it out?

Right, dukie, since i couldn't easily control the plug color with the mixture screw, i concluded that excess fuel to that cylinder was probably due to a float height problem--even though it was set according to factory specs.

The bike when i got it was plenty strrong on top end, so all my testing was done in the troublesome 4-5000 rpm range, which is tricky cuz that's a transition range between low and mid speed carb circuits.

As a precaution, i'll do a high speed plug cut to confirm that cylinder hasn't gone too lean at top end.

Photo (if it loads) shows final result of tuning on the cylinder that began with the darkest plug

2-trhumbs up, Matt, on your new VFR! By new, I mean it feels like a brand new bike, especially compared to riding mine with double the miles on it than yours does!

If there was a flat spot or carbureution problem before, it sure as hell is gone now!

Wow....it's like a totally new bike. I can't believe how hard this thing pulls.

The ride back from Buffalo unfortunately was full of rain and traffic but when I got back to Brampton it cleared up and I was able to open her up some.
Also, I rode the bike to work today and took it out for a spin at Lunch.

The bike pulls hard through the entire RPM range and responds very well to throttle input. I don't see any more fuel leakage and the bike idles and starts very well.

I must say Jerry you out did yourself. This is what I was hoping for when I first took the bike to get the carbs and valves done.

    Thank you very much.

Oh! ....and Rustedroot...I heard you took some pics, post 'em up. I'm eager to see them.

Glad you're enjoying it , Matt, and i say again that Canadians are damn good people !!!!!!

I could never have gotten the best results if you'd only sent me the carbs instead of the bike.

And here's the group photo you requested, although my camera's junk !!

I thought as much...I figured having it in your hands for the tuning would be the best bet....and it seems we were right.

    .........................................

AS a result of this project and cuz i've had ideas :)crazy:) cooking for years, i'm starting NOW to develop a REVOUTIONARY:crazy:SCIENTIFIC programme to make a machine to test, adjust and tune VFR carbs (off bike) to near perfection based upon the principals of Bernoulli, Eduardo Weber, Smoky Unick, and Rube Goldberg.

Winter's long here................. so maybe results in Spring if other projects don't intrude.

Slo, glad to see this thread is at it's end. Of course you could've saved yourself all of this aggrevation if you had simply bought mine. I could've picked you up at the airport and you could've rode the bike home. Now that it runs good you can move on to sorting the rest of the bike out. I mean that in a good way.

    Thanks!

I would have gone for your bike if you were closer. The process of taking the bike across the border is too much of a pain and would have added extra $$ to the cost of the bike.

In a perfect world I would have bought yours.

But yes....on with the rest of the bike.
