I did the same thing last weekend and tried the B-King. Very easy to ride and comfortable. Would be pretty easy to live with.... hmmmm...

After due consideration, nitronorth, I have come to the realization that although I understand your dilemma, I am not capable of feeling bad for you...

Seriously, though, there are so many great motorcycles to choose from. It took me about six months to narrow it down to a Triumph Sprint or a VFR, and another two months to pick one of them.

The theme that seems constant in my choices is the "do it all" style; no dedicated-purpose bikes. Hmm. Maybe I should sell the bikes and spend the money on a good psychiatrist...

Hey NitroNorth, I'm a fellow Canuck and I just went through the same bike-choosing path that you're going through now. I too narrowed my choices to the VFR, the FZ1, and the Bandit 1250S.
I ruled out BMW because my closest dealer is 4 hours away, plus I've heard that regular services can run anywhere from $300 to $500, even with no special problems to deal with (granted, they bleed all of the lines and replace all of the fluids, etc.).
Just a quick note...there is no FZ touring version. If the dealer is telling you that, he should probably fess up that he basically just added the lower fairing and the higher windscreen himself. They are Yamaha accessories, but there is no official touring version of the bike.
There were a few reasons I chose the VFR over the FZ1. First, it's what it doesn't have - because it's got a good sticker price, I figured that Yamaha must have cut some corners, and they did. First, there's no steering damper. Second, the front suspension is not adjustable to the same degree as the R1. Third, the seat is not that comfortable, and likely is not padded well. There's probably more things that I didn't consider.
The main reason for letting the FZ1 go for me was that the ergos are a little more sportbikish now, and after sitting on it, I realized that I wouldn't be able to spend a whole day (or even a few hours) on the FZ1. I talked to a member on Thumpertalk whose friends have had those exact problems with the new FZ1, so it might be an important consideration if you still want to do a weekend tour.
However, my feeling is that if you just want to go for a good romp - like heading out of town for a few minutes, then gunning it back to town, it's probably the best bike around for that.
I hear your predicament about the purchase though. I bought a new XR650L in 2005, and there's no way I'd buy another one just like it now. But I think the VFR is a little different - you could buy the hard bags for it, for example, and get the larger windscreen, and have a somewhat different bike! New tires, a new seat, and you're in business for some serious touring.

By the way, you're talking to a guy that's felt the wrath of the wind for three solid years now, so wind protection is a major factor in my bike choice.

Actually it is very much listed as a TE model from Yammy....on theirwebsite quite clearly..same as the bandit touring, but yes , last year you could order up the part to make one ..No big deal either way.....just cheaper when u get the package by a grand. In the end too much money for a naked bike with add on bags..besides, it just didnt give the protection i want ..Yep, it would be a blast for local stuff tho!!!.Really dont care anyway bout the bags...I would just hang em in the shed anyway 90% of the time..

In the end it wont be the fz1. Besides..i still like the feel of the little fz6 better..it just fits me, but it wont work to replace the vfr as too buzzzzy!

Right now the fjr looks good..I hate the big fat bikes normally, but this will 2 up great and still go for a tankerbike......bags off it almost looks like a nice bike... I dunno tho...Im just as happy on my 900f...think might just keep the vfr, find me anothe r old f bike, and play with it..wait till next yr and see...
