Dont jump to conclusions. Test everything!

Bolt regulater back on! Does it need to be grounded? I don't know.

Remove battery and properly charge! Charge at no more than 10% of its capacity. (14 amp Battery, charge at no more than 1.4 amps) Use a smart charger such as Battery Tender etc.

    Load Test

    Replace Battery if Necessary.

    Then do the drill!

It is cheaper to learn than to guess!

Had no joy with those gel batteries, waste of time, glass matt is the only type worth buying now. Motorbatt are pretty good, made in China but obviously the American designers ensure the Chinese don't cut corners and cheapen the quality. What I think happens with the gell type, motorcycle alternators are too aggressive on them and just bugger them up. These batteries are the ones I find mostly will read 12.5 volt but put them under load and there is nothing in them, they just fall over

Buy the original equipment Yuasa. Yeah it's going to cost you $150 or a little more but how much does it cost when your ass is stranded in the middle of nowhere? I bet it's a lot more than the $75 you saved on a cheap battery! Get the Yuasa and forget about it for 5 to 7 years!

Is the Yuasa a wet acid battery? if so forget it, outdated technology from a bygone era

I recently bought a 96 VFR 750 without a battery at all. I am new to streetbikes and i want to buy the right battery the first time. Most people have been shouting Yuasa YTX12-BS, but then i read that these AGM Batteries are the new thing these days. I tried using the search functions but there are way too many threads that go to left field about everything under the sun except battery brands, types, etc. I need to buy a battery asap to get my bike running and need to know what has worked best for our bikes. I am not concerned with cost, so much as i am concerned with quality. Can someone knowledgeable on batteries please help a new rider>?

Rosh - There's nothing wrong with a standard lead acid type battery. Many people use Yuasa.

Yes, the new age batteries have improved technology, run more consistent, are lighter, etc. But the old fashioned lead batteries will still work, and if maintained properly, there's no reason why you can't/won't get at least 3-4 years out of one of them.

Note if you go with an AGM or gel, some of them require specific battery chargers - they don't work with your lead core chargers.

I went the CHEEPO route since day one... except for the Airtech front fairing. I burned out 2 voltage regulator. Stock 25 year old unit's. Just replaced with a unit off an 06 cbr I got at Baltimore Cycle Salvag under 50 bucks. Rode the hell out of it and had no issues befor I parked it and drove home to western new york.
But I found CROMEBATTERY on ebay and got a "igel" battery for 40 bucks shipped. It's been a trooper and not blown up on me yet!
But after this issue I charged and let the battery sit for 2 days then had it load tested and found it was at 237cca. Battery was listed as 180cca.
Motorcycle battery's are disposable and I cant dispose more than what I spent!
Upgrade to a newer voltage regulator. What ever battery you get will be much happier!

    +1 to the above.

As for charging motorbike batteries I suggest that before buying a replacement battery you read relevant sections of the FAQ on the following website - they know their stuff.

    http://www.whitedogbikes.com/shop/content/category/2-battery-information

As for yuasa batteries the specifications of their various batteries (and optional "upgrades") are available on this document ..

    www.yuasabatteries.com/pdfs/Yuasa_Specs_Apps_2014.pdf

In Europe the new 800 VFRs all come with ABS so they have the uprated YTZ12-BS Yuasa (High Performance) Battery -compared with the standard Glass Matt YTX12-BS Yuasa fitted as OEM kit to earlier non ABS vtec models. If you look after them (ie don't kill it by leaving the lights on over night) they will usually last at least 4 riding seasons. You might want to beware of cheap GEL type batteries on eBay. One of my friends bought one for their CBR which failed just 8 days after the 1 year warranty expired!

    Take care

I can get an EXIDE YTX12-BS for $68.00. Does anyone have anything good or bad to say about these batteries? It is the maintenance free battery that comes with the acid separate.

Also what type of battery charger should i buy for this battery? Will Tender Jr. do the trick or is that the wrong kind?

Sounds good. Get a charger from Walmart. But a newer regulator/rectifier is what your future will require!
Good luck and enjoy your new ride.

Tender Jr will be fine. Car chargers are the same thing. A 12v battery is a 12v battery. For a tender or trickle charger you want something 2amps or less. Preferably 1.5. And make sure its a float charger that will automatically stop charging once the battery is at capacity.
