Former MotoGP world champion Nicky Hayden has suffered severe brain damage as a result of his bicycle accident, a medical statement issued on Thursday confirmed.

The American remains hospitalised in the Intensive Care unit in the Bufalini hospital in Cesena, having been hit by a car while riding with friends on Wednesday.

In a 17:00 CET update, the hospital confirmed that Hayden's condition remains extremely critical.

A statement said the 35-year-old suffered serious polytrauma with subsequent serious cerebral damage in the accident and that his prognosis remains unknown.


Hayden's fiancee Jackie has been by his side so far, and she has been joined by his mother Rose and his brother Tommy, who had flown from the United States.

MotoGP legend and Hayden's friend Valentino Rossi paid homage to the American rider, who beat him to the MotoGP title in 2006.

"Very, very bad news from yesterday," said Rossi ahead of the French Grand Prix on Thursday. "I spoke straight away with a doctor, my friend, and he said that from the very first moment the situation was very difficult for Nicky"

So sad to see this, you are totally exposed on a bicycle when you are on the road. My prayers to Nicky and family.
It is amazing that Danica Patrick (white Ford on left) Joey Logano (hidden behind #43) walked away without a scratch and Eric Almirola had a single compressed vertebrae and Nicky is damn near killed.

The prognosis remains guarded.

 

WSBK at Laguna 2 years ago , stood in line for ever to get his autograph 2 people or so in front of us the guys came out and said that's the end of the line he has to go--/ what did he do, grabbed a sharpie and walked down the line signing for everyone.

Yep, got to shake his hand at Laguna 2001 I believe, when we were noising around in the pits on a Saturday morning, he was just sitting there with the crew. just an everyday kinda guy taking it all in. Hard to take in when looking at the risk he was surrounded with.. just crazy.

John Ulrich spoke to Earl Hayden this morning. He says Earl insists Nicky is NOT dead, was never in an induced coma although he's on life support. He has not had any surgery yet. Also, Nicky was riding alone, not in a group of 14 riders. Fake news.
