I went 185 once while touring with wife on the back. That was only after several tankfuls and monitoring mileage to determine if I could realistically make it. I did with just a couple tenths of a gallon left in the tank. But I also had an emergency 1 quart fuel can full of 93 octane in a side case.

I have to go between Sacramento and Long beach often for family and that stretch of I-5 is possibly the most vile stretch of asphalt known to man, seen it a million times and no need to stop more than required. Can get it done on one fill up on the FJR, sounds like three or four stops on the 1200. That would start to piss me off real fast, sometimes you just got to get it done.

Since my commute is around 65mile round trip, I have gone 130 miles several times without the low fuel light coming on. Each time I gassed up just a little over 3 gals, which means there was likely about 1.5 gal left in the tank. Theoretically, I could probably push it another 40-50 miles easily, but I see no reason to. Everybody's riding habits are different, and mine are such that I don't much care to go more than 100-120 miles in a stretch. I am glad that my usual riding buddies feel pretty much the same way.

BTW, in other threads talking about Lithium batteries and aftermarket exhaust, a lot of VFR riders seem to think the few lbs weight savings are significant. The way I see it, another 1 or 2 gals of gas (6-12 lbs) are gonna be perched up higher than either the battery or the exhaust location, so their influence on handling should be even more pronounced. Since I tend to look at the VFR as more a sportbike than a tourer, the range is on par with litre sportbikes I've had. But i can see why those who view it more as a tourer might think otherwise.

One really great way to pare off weight on those heavyass 1200's is drilling lots of holes in the gas tank. This is far from an original idea or suggestion. The harleydoods have been doing this for years.

I'd say since she's between a sportbike and a tourer, the range should be (at least) between them as well. However there's no real reason for the small tank, 'cause weight reduction clearly wasn't one of the primary goals in development.

Had to be saved he other day from running out of gas. Gonna have to get used to stopping by the station every 2-3 days instead of every week or 2.

Considering a 2012+ VFR but range is a concern for since my commute is 155-160 miles round trip. On all my last rides, I would fill up in the morning next to home and then fill up at the same station on the way back home.
Does anyone else have a similarly long commute and are you able to make it there and back on one tank?? For the record, it's all super-slab, but thankfully I don't do it every day.

That should not be a problem...and I'm one of the guys who bitches about the short range. If it was all stop and go, it would be dicey. I made it about 180 miles on a tank while touring with wifey on the back and luggage loaded. Had about .2 gals left when I pulled up to the pump. Low fuel warning comes on ridiculously early. You should be ok at 160 if you're already used to tanking up daily. Mileage is slightly lower I think during the break-in period.

There are alternatives to this range issue.

    1. Buy a Honda 90.

Every 2-3 days?! Heck, most times I gas up on my way home near the house, even though my commute is only 65 miles and with lunch runs and some other excursions added, I rarely get close to 100 miles. Takes less than 5 minutes to top off and I much prefer not having to think about gas for the next time.

160 miles of superslab you could easily do it if there is no traffic congestion and you don't gun it at 110mph. I occasionally do 2 commute RT's at 130+ miles without the fuel light coming on. I get 40+mpg cruising at hwy speeds.

I'm afraid to figure out the mileage I'm getting, less then 200km a tank most of the time but I do love the sound of the engine much better when that little needle on the dohicky is close the little red numbers.
