Hey Toe, my stock needles are worn down and I plan to replace them. Would you recommend OEM needles over the dynojet parts. The OEM cost a bit more, but if you think they are better, I'll go that route.

I have a stage 2 (yes, dynojet DID make a stage 2 for this bike) dynojet kit in my 87 model 700, and it's ran rich as hell since it was installed. I obviously need to have it dyno tuned, but should I have the needles replaced in the process??

You can see the WILD difference in the taper on the needles from stock to Dynojet, there is no way to get around that. If you want a smooth range of operation stock is the only choice.

This just makes me wonder how the stock, non-adjustable needles would work with a set of jetted carbs, considering they're already allowing so much more fuel through the carbs than stock. Would the stock needles actually be adequate to allow/measure enough fuel to compliment the larger jets that would be installed with a jet kit (especially a stage 2)?

You can shim the stock needles to desires height. I would only use OEM jet sizes as well. It has been mt experience that a little is a lot when making changes to jetting.

Try adjusting the clip or adding a washer to tune out the flat spot. Experimentation and a few carb r&r's may be needed. With dyno time and washers for adjustment the flat spot could be minimized at least.
