85 VFR500: some questions?

    After you soder the pin hole flush the tank and seal it with redkote or por 15

    I've never seen cam problems on a 500, but many bad bottom ends, test the oil pressure as in the manual before buying and do it when it's hot, as far as the price goes, you usually get what you pay for if your careful, good luck. jmac

    Actually, only a few early 84's had bottom end problems. By far the biggest issue with the 500's is dropped valves. The problem is due to valve float caused by valve springs that get weak. The only solution is to replace the springs. I suggest streetbikes have their springs replaced somewhere in the 20-30,000 mile range. If you want to be safe you can replace them sooner. I've seen dropped valves in engines with less than 10,000 miles.

    FYI - One ignition box is larger only because it contains the driver circuit for the tach. I believe that the rev limiter is incorporated into the programming of both boxes.
