I have had similar situations happen with cars. If the vehicle dies when the battery is disconnected it usually indicates the alternator is shot. All the battery really should be doing is spinning over the engine not be the main source of power.

A word of caution, remove the fork caps and check you fender to radiator, engine, fairing clearance with the forks at full compression. Sliding the stock fork tubes to the extent shown in the photos is a nonflier.

To be honest this build is a bit troubling from a safety point of view. I would recommend a qualified tech carefully review your work before you road test.

Hey IC I am planning on putting the forks back to normal height but other than the body work nothing has really changed. If I may ask you though what concerns you about this bike I would really like to know.

Could you please post a crib sheet on the mods to date. You mentioned earlier about a swingarm extension and a widened rear wheel.

Thanks for the update. The rims and tire sizes are stock? I may have missed a post but I thought originally you mentioned a modified swingarm and a widened rear rim.

I was going to do a long swingarm but I decided not to and just leave it stock. Now as far as the rim is concerned, I measured it and from the outside to outside the rear rim measures out to be 5.5 inches and I know for a fact that that is not a stock size plus it has a 160 tire on it. I was thinking about making some 4" swingarm extensions but still not sure, but for now it is going to stay stock.

I forgot to mention that the tire size for the front is 130/70/r16 and the back is 160/60/r18. The rims and tires came with the bike when I got it.

    Thanks for the post.

Yes, this is what I was remembering.

If I could ask where did this rim come from? A 155mm wide tire is as large as you can go with stock swingarm. Some 160s will fit some will not. Most owners end up installing a 150 when going with an F2 wheel conversion or a 140 when going with a CBR600F conversion.

This said, adding 4" onto the length of swingarm is suspect. Strictly from a performance standpoint I am not fan of increasing the wheelbase on a 500. These bikes were known for their neutral handling and fiddling with the wheelbase may negatively affect this.

I very much appreciate your enthusiasm for the build so please don't take my criticism as overly negative. Rather, I would like to make the point that modifications like this need to be very carefully vetted to insure rider safety along with performance loss or gain.

Front tire is way too wide for the stock rim.

Hey IC I was checking the front this morning and it seems that it is also not stock at least i don't think it is. I will have to measure it when I get off of work and compare it to the spare stock rim I have laying around in my shop. At least that rim I know is off of a 500. I think who ever had it before Me had put different rims on but I'm not sure. Do you happen to know what other bikes have a 5.5 rear rim and FYI my tire has a good clearance from the chain but it is a 160 for sure.

Hey man I am all about safety especially since I had a bad wreck about 4 years ago. Gravel sucks, I wrecked my 4 month old 06 gsxr 600, I hit a patch of gravel in a turn and I flew about a hundred feet. Thank God for helmets, leather jackets, and boots oh yeah and angels. But anyways I appreciate your concern and I take everyones criticism into consideration. I'm just glad there are people that are willing to help me with anything I need help with so thanks to everyone, I really couldn't do this without y'all.

This is a bit of a puzzle. The design of the rim (this was based on a Dymag wheel back in the day) looks stock but from your description they are much wider. If I could ask, are there any markings on the rims?

    For reference:

    VF500F, 2.5F, 2.75R
    CBR600F, 2.5F, 3.5R
    CBR600F2, 3.5F, 4.5R

Stock tire sizes for a 3.5F rim and 4.5R rim are 120F and 160R.

From my research a 180 or a 190 tire is standard for a 5.5" rim.

I would check with the manufacturer but I believe a 160 tire is way too narrow to mount on a 5.5" rim.

I really don't know if they have any markings but I will let you know when I get home from work. Eventually I want to go with different rims possibly f2 rims but there is a guy that put a rc51 frontend and cbr 900 rims on I think. So that is a possibility. I have a set of 2000 gsxr 600 forks, clip-ons, trips and rim so I'm think about fitting those ones on there but not sure.

IC is asking some good questions.

I too am curious about the rims on this bike as those tire sizes are much wider than stock.

IIRC the stock tire width on the VF500 is a 100?
