So you're thinking that MAYBE I would have to go from 90 to 108s, but the Factory rec of 112s are out of the question?

I know it's hard to say over the web without seeing it/riding it. Just looking for your thoughts. You have a lot more time with/around these bikes than me undoubtedly. I was thinking that a hundred 1985 VF500s with the same pipe and the same K&N would take the same jets and operate the same, but it's not sounding that way.

INCORRECT. When a pulse generator develops an open circuit it fails at all rpms.

They can be fine on startup, then fail shortly after the engine reaches full operating temperature, then work again when the engine has cooled.

Yea, not so lucky. There's way too many variables still on a 25yr old bike and engine. 1st, what model carbs are on that thing (I think there are 3 or 4if you count california models), what altitude are you at, what compression is your engine still putting out, do you ride when it's 30 degrees out or only when it's 80+,.....

    dynos DO LIE!

    Hi
Don't think Dynos are the holy grail in power testing.

I have yet to see two of them that agree precisely with each other, ever.

Also, keep in mind that a dyno will APPROXIMATE the ride you will experience to some degree, but the weight and shifting and throttle habits, in which gear, at what speeds, are ALL very individual traits, and only YOU will be riding your own bike in YOUR own way, most of the time.
When I was a fulltime Pro Bike Tech at Seattle Yamaha I used to ask customers to be HONEST with me and PLEASE tell me exactly what their primary use was going to be with THIS SPECIFIC BIKE, and would TUNE IT accordingly.
When you adjust valves, for instance, you arte actually changing the lift and duration of the cams for a specific use, if you are a REAL pro.
When you jet a carb or tune the injection, you should know the elevation and intended use of the bike...SPECIFICALLY for the OWNER!

    OK?

Now, having said all that, factory tune up specs will get you into the ballpark and generally are published by the manufacturer to make the bike last and perform adequately under most circumstances, for most people, most of the time, so they have to shoot at the whole WORLD when they publish them, and the Whole World is a big place to generalize about.

These days, CORRECT oil is very very important, more than ever.

the American DOT and EPA have dictated to the oil designers exactly what they will be allowed to include in their oils, and so.. TODAY..2009, it is VERY IMPORTANT to use an oil that is rated for 4 stroke motorcycles(MA) and also passes the JASO standards, which are Japanese valve wear standards.. (VERY STRINGENT) Keep in mind that a JASO and MA should be the minimum rating on the back of the oil you will be using on your bike, if you CARE about it lasting. Racing oil should NOT be used unless you are actually RACING, because it is designed to hold up NOT for an extended period of use..OK?
It WILL protect your engine better for a SHORTER period of time, but keep in mind that real racers change their oil very very frequently and many of the most successful ones wil change it after EVERY SINGLE RACE!

    Ok

Now... if you do not wrap up your engine near or on or over the redline much, you GENERALLY can get away with setting the valves a little tighter than the factory specs and get more lift and more duration .. and POSSIBLY...better breathing out of them, but this is where you need to figure out where you will be spending most of your RPM life on the bike.

Many youngsters (I am now 60, but I have screwed up PLENTY of my own bikes learning this the HARD and EXPENSIVE WAY) think they will just throw money at their bikes, get all rfull out racing stuff on them, and then later find out they have contracted out or have built themselves an unstreetable hand grenade that bucks, loads up and fouls the plugs about every 50 miles, doesn't idle properly in traffic, and EXPLODES the rods through the cases when they miss a shift or overwind the bike, or the bike starts popping out of gear because they have power shifted it so many times the dogs in the gearboxes are rounded, though the gears themselves are fine as froghair.

For every action, there WILL be an equal and opposite RE ACTION..DUH.
We used to get people bitching about their bike popping out of second gear all the time, and some people thought Yamahas had BAD second gears in their earlier FJ and some other models..well..yes and no...

.. if they were POWER SHIFTED INTO SECOND about 34754564647478 times without the clutch, eventually the shift dogs would get rounded, and it would POP out of ANY gear they had been POWER shifting, REPEATEDLY, ..INTO!
Making a fulldeliberate shift avoids this or just have the gears tempered and back cut if you will be dragging your touring or sport touring bike.
Yamaha WAS originally unaware that Americans WILL DRAGRACE...well...
    ANYTHING!
Gasoline powered pogo sticks (YES..they did make them, before the LAWYERS put their scummy moneygrubbing personal injury insurance scamming no personal responsibility THIEVING hands on them, and they were FUN!)
NO INSULT here to all the HONEST lawyers out there, and I have actually MET a FEW of them in my 60 YEARS of life in the USA.

Gerry Spence being the #1 of all, and some others who are very concerned about insane laws, STUPID laws, and laws dictated by POLITICIANS, who generally, are..OTHER LAWYERS.. or other types of PROFITEERING HYPOCRITE PROSTITUTES......and the SCUMMIEST OF ALL!

    Especially here in INDIANA!

    Anyway...

Don't get me started on THAT!

    OK...

Back to LOGICAL and HONEST and FUN THINGS!

Just be very careful what you ASK FOR, because you just might GET IT!

You go telling some TECH that you want all the horsepower you can get out of an engine, you better be ready for some Carillo rods or some other good wellmade and expensive units, a welded crank by Falicon, in case you have a roller bearing bottom end, lightened valve train, tempered and back cut gears in your tranny, on and on it can go, and you better be well funded somehow or have a real nice relationship with your bank LOAN officer..because you will simply have to pay to play.
Take a touring bike out there and wheelie it, you better come down SMoothly, under very hard accelleration, or you will BLOW the fork seals out of your bike..street bikes are hard to design so that BLASTING oil past the seals when the front end is SLAMMED down with about 47546754757 pounds of pressure (MAYBE A little LESS THAN THAT) on it won't eventually cause the seals to leak...duh.... like a loaded freight train falling on a hydrauliuc ram, even from a D10 caterpillar or a strong hydraulic crane that can normally PICK UP a freight train... it simplky constitutes ABUSE...OK?

Dirt bikes are different, are designed for it, and are MUCH lighter than your average sportbike, but even slamming down the hydraulics (front end) will eventually take its toll on the seals.

Ask intelligent questions and be very HONEST with yourself and your mechanic about the intended use of your specific bike, and the next time you are looking at a bike and the fork seals are leaking, especially idf the fluid has been leaking down the fork legs, and the BRAKES are soaked in fork oil, and the bike pops out of ANY gear, and the rear tire has a worn patch right down the center of it while retaining the outside tread about 100%, then you better get it CHEAP, because there..WILL be CASH out of your pocket to put it back to where it is properly functioning again, and if the guy is the original owner and he tells you he has been GENTLE as a LAMB with the bike, just don't VOTE for him in the next election..ok? and don't f...ing BUY his LIES anymore,or at any time in the future, either, and this place will be better for everyone ELSE that has to live here, too.
I aint mad at anybody,Human SCUM have always been with us. I just KNOW THE SCORE and hate it when the SCUM get ahold of the steering wheel and throttle around this joint (the USA), that's all. Season's Greetings to all the decent honest motorcyclists and BIKERS out there, and as a group, we are among the most functional and hard working and HONEST people in this country. I have lived all over this place, and I will simply state that as an established FACT! We feel the LOVE of the road, generally speak the TRUTH and act and work as FUNCTIONAL and contributing members of this ratrace place more than any other single group of peoplewho live in this country, and I've had some experience with ALL of the groups by now. Amen and be careful and do good work and stay in touch and have a Marry Christmas and a prosperous and happy New Year, if you can. We need some NEW things around this joint in the upcoming year, and a little more happiness and prosperity would be a real good start, for EVERYone, not just the politicians and the insurance industry and the profiteering scum. Amen.
Outlawing voting MACHINES, FOREVER, like in CANADA, would be a good FIRST step. They used to call that .. well ... being able to VOTE!
About 85 % of the SCUM would be out of office in the FIRST VOTE!
I FIX machines for a living, but mine are HONEST fixes. Get it? Hope so!

There.. I feel MUCH BETTER NOW!
Vented it all, safely, as always, again.

    Safety FIRST! Bye for now.

    I'm here to help.
If I make you think, I'm helping.
If you learn about tuning, I'm helping.
    It's simple. Thanks fellas.

Learning frequently involves reading or otherwise listening
to the guys who have screwed THEIR things up.
Might help you NOT screw up YOUR stuff, right?

If the old farts like me don't share their knowledge it's probably because they don't have any or are too busy, or too insecure and are afraid of the kids coming up.

That's a cowardly and dishonorable and dysfunctional way to conduct yourself, with the exception being if you are just too busy yourself and have no proteges or apprentices.

I've trained and inspired a boatload of them in my life, and I was simply passing it along..simple functional behavior of an elder since we began.

To enable the continuity and love of the Sport you gotta pass it along to the pups, and SHAME onyer ass if ya DON'T!

You can do it by inspiring others or by teaching, or by both, but LISTENING is always a two way street. Interrupting a kid's question before it's fully asked is pretentious.

As I get older, my definition of OLDER and KID go up and up.

I still feel very young and vibrant at almost 60, and can still do about everything I've EVER been able to do, and most things a hell of a lot better with fewer mistakes.

When I was a pup I asked a lot of hard questions until I hit the outer edge of a Tech's abilities to answer them, then I would move on to some Alphadog's book like Kevin Cameron's or his Fellows who had DONE it and pravailed or had shared it with some writer who recorded it for posterity.

Theory and breaking things is the cutting edge of R&D, (Research and Development).

If you aren't breaking things in R&D, then you just haven't hit the outside edge of the component or the design's potential.

Nothing SIMPLE about that, as any number of things are involved.

Metallurgy, physics, combustion theory, hydraulics, heat transfer properties of various components, harmonics, air resistance and its vortex characteristics, traction compounds and needs under specific and general conditions..on and on.

Keep in mind that a modern bike actually travels almost TWICE as fast as most AIRPLANES did during WW1 and you can better picture the forces at work here. Failures can HAPPEN!

    Ok, gotta go.

My woman has just run out of nitro in her gas powered pogo stick and she just LOVES to pop around on it, and I just LOVE to watch her do it.

Its a love circle and a guy's a fool to break it. I'll be around.

    Engine Jim
