2001 FI Electrical Burning Smell

I'd get a new R/R before anything fries/blows.

 

Hey I got a 5th gen too..I just replaced my RR with the super mosfet kit from roadstercycle. I was having one of the same issues as you - Not all the time, but a decent amount - my dashboard would reset too when trying to start the bike. The bike totally died on me once, and i was able to push start it with no problems riding home. Ive only ridden a handful of times since I put the new RR in a week ago, along with a new battery, but it seems pretty ok. One of those times, post new RR install, i pushed the starter and nothing happened - didnt hear the fuel pump prime either - but i simply clicked the kill switch once more then heard the pump prime and it started fine.
