2000 vfr - high idle at temperature ??

    Check for a vacuum leak. Prop the tank up, fire her up, and lightly spray carb cleaner around the throttle body base (gasket bad) and hoses (cracked) or unhooked and see if engine speed changes any.

    Got exactly the same problem 2001 model. Only happened since doing Pair Removal

    Cold idle fine. Hot idle 2500rpm. Guess I'll try the hot idle screw first. Maybe I shifted it when doing the PAIR...

    I drained and flushed my rads. Then took off the breather box pulled the hoses off the wax unit cleaned the wax unit fluid resivoir fluid and tested with a hair dryer. Fixed my problem.

    I had the same things happening too.

    Fixed it right up.

    The PAIR system bleeds some fresh air from the airbox into the exhaust port to aid destruction of unburnt hydrocarbons to assist in meeting air emission limits. Removal of the PAIR system gets rid of quite a bit of surplus plumbing that makes for easier maintenance, but does nothing for performance. Some have reported that it reduces popping on deceleration (which sounds plausible) and others that it improves part-throttle running on bikes equipped with an O2 sensor (which also sounds plausible). On my 99 it did nothing but remove weight and hoses.

    Ok so lifted the tank turned the hot idle screw anti clockwise... no change.

    It seems that the *metal thing* that pushes on the screw gets stuck. IE theres
    an inconvenient gap between it and the screw.

    Is this the replace the "fast idle wax unit" part problem or am I going to get lucky with some
    well placed lube?

    I had the exact same problem.

    Step 1.
    Drain antifreeze.

    Step 2 .
    Mix distilled water and white vinegar 50/50

    Step 3.
    Fill rads and run bike for 10 to 15 min revving the throttle to high RPMs off and on throughout the 10 to 15 min.

    Step 4.
    Allow bike to cool then drain coolant.

    This will conclude the rad flush.

    Then remove the breather box. Remove the hoses and cap on the kick stand side of the wax seal unit. Clean the bowl and make sure antifreeze is flowing into the bowl. Get a portable heat source. Test the wax seal unit to verify the wax unit is functioning appropriately.

    This fix didnt cost me a dime, just time.

    After replacing my thermostat and hoses I has the same issue. On another forum someone recomended spraying the starter valve linkages with WD-40. Super easy to do and it worked!! 2000 rpm during warm up and 1200 hot.

    This high idle does seem to be a symptom of sticky start valves and a wax unit perhaps adjusted a wee bit high.

    Check this sticky situation out...
    You can see the filth in the air bypass ports and the upper valve is stuck almost wide open! Yah she ran but it wasn't pretty. A good clean an lube of the valves as well as a sync sorted it all out.
