Thank you OZ. I'm looking forward to studying your drawing - I am liking your solution more and more. I have procured a very nice set of RC51 SP2 calipers, and will be planning on shimming them out as necessary to center on the discs. Your attachment didn't come through, the website said invalid attachment, but I have looked at the photos of your brackets w/o fender on one of Mello Dude's threads. I'll touch base with Terry too.
    Thanks again.

If I was doing this again, I would make some brackets in the same manner as Oz. My brackets took a few hours of labour and were overkill. The tip on the washers is also correct, 2 x 1.5mm thick washers superglued to the inner face of each of the caliper mounts worked well for me. SP2 calipers are (IMO) the best choice, and a CBR600RR master from 03 is a perfect size match and identical in appearance to the VFR item. I have this combination (ex a CBR954) on my VTR and they are a great blend of feel and power.

Happy to provide any other info or advice if that would help.

Sounds good Terry - thanks for the input. You've helped me finalize my plan.

One question pops up though. I've read threads from several people who had to grind material away from the VTR fork before their RC51/F4i/929/954 calipers fit, but needing to add 3mm of washers implies that no grinding is necessary. Can you help me understand what the difference between needing to grind and needing to add washers might be?

    Cheers

OK one thing at a time. The washers are needed to centre the calipers on the discs, so that the pistons extend an even distance to contact the disc on either side.

Grinding the lower mount is simply to create clearance between the fork mount and the caliper. The stock VTR calipers have a bit of a recess between the pistons whereas the RC51 etc calipers are straight. Without grinding, the top mount lines up nicely but the caliper is swung up and back slightly by the interference so the lower bolt can't enter the threads in the caliper. Trust me this is very obvious when you have the parts in your hand!

The photo is not great but I have circled where the filing was needed and you can hopefully see the stepped area that I made, while keeping the outer surface stock.

FWIW I have the F4 calibers, heard they work better, if that's something to the fit of MC, as I also have the F4 MC. I figured there may be some fine tuning how the calibers line up here, so I'm taking it as it comes. Luck had it the gentleman that had the SH lowers also had the fender adapter brackets, looks like they are CNC, so I'm cool there. Now as the rear goes, Have the rear MC off a F4, I'm just getting down to the final stretch figuring out brake line size and color ;) Other than taking the forks apart to hook up the SH lowers, Just had Jamie re do em last spring, SMH, I should have done this then. It looks to be pretty straight forward of a project.

AFAIK, the 600F4 and F4i calipers and master are identical and use the 32/34mm pistons and 15.87mm master, which gives a high caliper:master ratio, for the most squeeze at the disc for the least hand force. I found it a bit grabby. My preference is the 954/SP2 set up which uses 30/32mm calipers and 17.46mm master; a little less powerful, but much better feel. I've used both calipers with VTR forks, the fit issue that requires a bit of filing is the same with both. I ended up getting a CBR600RR master which is a 17.46mm size, and using that with the 600F4 calipers, which IMHO is a good compromise.
All are infinitely better than stock.

Yep, it's looking that way, but since I'm like looking / working on exhaust, might wait and see if I need what for where. Soon though, soon.

Then of all things, this happened to land in the garage... DSC02146.jpg
