Maybe try using a car battery and jumper cables b4 pulling the clutch cover again. :distress:

Eliminate the switch wiring and solenoid by touching the positive wire directly to the wire terminal on the starter.

86 and 87 clutch covers are not interchangeable, the pick up coils are not the same size and the cover was cast to reflect this. When the cover is tightened it will force the coils into the starter clutch and it will not turn over. The spacer under the starter idler gear can cause this problem as well, if it is missing from the pin. It is easy to not catch that it fell off when the cover is removed and the pin goes with it instead of staying in the cases. The gear just slides over and binds. I have seen both of these issues more times than I can count.

Totally forgot about that damn spacer. I didnt put mine together without it, but i remember making a note of it when i took mine apart on how easy it would be to forget or lose it. Good call.

TC... for personal clarification... An 86 cover will go on 87 without issues though?

So I got home, pulled the clutch cover, and the engine immediately freed up. When I took off the broken clutch cover, that spacer did fall out. I noticed it and put it back on, but I didn't know which side it fell off of. I didn't look it up because I am an idiot who was rushing and I put it on the wrong side. It was pinching the starter sprocket/clutch. So now, with the spacer on the correct side the engine happily turns over. All i need is a fresh gasket and some oil and we will be rolling. Thank you all so much. I am sorry for such a foolish mistake -_-

Right on. Someday I may have to come see your museum of Interceptor art. I grew to love them due to my wife's uncles 85 VF1000R. Probably the only one in Woodland, besides his 86 "project"

Ahh yes the old starter clutch under the side cover. Wasn't even thinking that way cause of the current bike I have. Good call.
