I know what yer saying about the leaning out, Matt. That's why I ordered the jet kit:wink:

But i think before i do any modifying of stock mufflers, im going to get a back up pair (I found a slightly beat pair online somewhere real cheap) so I dont ruin the nice ones I already have on my bike. Ill set them aside.

Anything you do to the stock mufflers will gain you only sound, but don't expect any performance gains. Any extra flow you get out of the pipes will actually screw up the scavaging of the collector, thus negating any possible gains. This is most evident when adding a set of aftermarket slip-ons - they actually cause a decrease in power. With some jetting work you can sometimes (depending on the pipes) get the power back to stock but that's about it.

As Matt mentions, the only real way to make additional power with the early VF's is to install a 4-1 full system. Too bad those haven't been made for almost 8 years now. Oh well, such is the life of a VF owner!

Hmmm I like this idea. What do you have to modify to get them to mount/fit? Just the inlet or mounting brackets as well? Bye the way Jamie the shock you built about a year ago is working great and the VF500F is up and running. Thanks for all your help. It needs a bit more "noise" so I'm looking into exhaust mods.

I know this thread is old, very old, but I just recently got my VF500F, an 86, and I was recently looking at the exhaust because I was going to heatwrap it.

I have a Clymers manual, and it states that the exhaust has a collector where all 4 pipes hit, and then the mufflers appear to be attached to that.

When looking at my exhaust, I do not have a collector. It is 4 pipes total, 1 for each cylinder. They merge into a 2-1 style and then hit the muffler.

    Is this incorrect or normal?

sounds like a vance & hines exhaust to me take some pictures of it the stock exhaust has a big collector box on the bottom of the bike where all the pipes go in

I'll try and snap a photo on my dinner break..

It appears to be stock looking mufflers though, which confuses me?

I definitely don't see a large collector. The front pipe which is easily viewable definitely goes right from the front of the bike, merges with the 2nd (rear pipe) and goes right to the muffler.

The rear pipe appears to be coming from the back of the motor and merging directly with the aforementioned front pipe, and hitting the muffler.

They are a bit rusty/dirty but no holes damage etc - so I plan on cleaning them and wrapping them.

Did all years 84-86 run a collector? Maybe the 86 didn't use it?

Hey great it'd be cool if it is.

I wonder if it's jetted properly for the exhaust then. There are no dynojet decals anywhere - but it does run well.

I need to choke it for about a minute so it can warm up while I ride, after that I crank down the choke and its good to go.

    The exhaust growls, for sure.

After looking at pictures of the VF500F V&H exhaust, that is exactly what I have.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction! I may eventually take them off, remove the rust and have them jetcoated - but for now, sanded down and exhaust wrapped looks good to me.

Got one side wrapped, just have to do the other side. It's a pain in the a$$ to do it while it's on the bike, but then so is removing the exhaust..
