so i had some problems with my 86 vf500

    the following symptoms started:

    1. started needing the choke to start the bike

    2. started bogging really badly at about 5500 rpm to 6000 rpm, and a tapping noise slowly started getting louder.

    3. finally the tapping (or ticking) was louder than the exhaust when i was riding. i stopped riding.

when i pulled off the valve cover i found one of the tappet adjusting screws and locknut missing. luckily i pulled them out of the oil channel before it caused any damage, and set my valve clearances.

check your valves everyone, its easy and who knows what you will find in a 28 year old bike
