WD-40 on a rag. You'll be done in minutes. Simple Green when done, then regular soap/water.
Pics? most gas caps wont' close without the key in (maybe turned a bit).

And I'm surely not knocking you...just stating the facts. We see the same all of the time at track days too.
I will refrain from providing any of those details. A VFR is a LOT of bike for a first motorcycle and will really slow your learning curve.

Dirty connector would my my first guess. I've certainly had that on other bikes. Check the connectors in that circuit, including the fuse and fuse...
