Sounds stupid but a fresh oil change may help. Mine is better with age but could notice the poor shifting with need of a service.
New boots should seal well enough on there own to prevent such a leak. You may want to remove and carefully inspect the boots and sealing...

Make sure the coupler has not been pushed back on the shaft too far and is just not being turn by the bolt head, mine has done it a couple of times.
I only ride my gen 2 to keep fresh gas in it. A far cry from the 07. (Gen 2 on the battery tender as I type)

A fail R/R could easily fail to a dead short and fail a sator in my opinion. Difficult to know what went wrong as the R/R's are sealed.
