Sounds stupid but a fresh oil change may help. Mine is better with age but could notice the poor shifting with need of a service.

Make sure the coupler has not been pushed back on the shaft too far and is just not being turn by the bolt head, mine has done it a couple of times.
I only ride my gen 2 to keep fresh gas in it. A far cry from the 07. (Gen 2 on the battery tender as I type)

A fail R/R could easily fail to a dead short and fail a sator in my opinion. Difficult to know what went wrong as the R/R's are sealed.
