It would be my guess your not getting it all the way into gear if was able to go back to neutral. Sounds more like a shift drum related issue...

That sucks oot loud aboot the cams, Mega Cycle will resurface the cams and followers but it is very expensive and a pain but your bike is clean...

Inspect the start button, it is common for the button to be damaged from use and the contact for the head light will fail to line up correctly.
I am with Rainbow on this one. Last royal star I road reminded me that walking is really not that bad of a way of getting around.
The valve will eventually fail and drop into the cylinder. This would be bad. You are lucky you caught it when you did.
This is a common failure and I am sorry to say there is now easy fix, you will need to remove the head and have the valve replaced.....all of them...

The first disc is different from the rest, it has a larger I.D. to allow room for the judder spring. Is the order correct?

Check the four pin connector at the starter relay, often it will be damaged due to heat related to a poor connection.
