I have found that spinning the pistons, while pushing them past the seals, normally takes care of any chance of rolling the seal.
If you wear one and the other doesn't, only reduces your chances to 80%. If both are wearing a mask, it cuts it down to 1.5% chance.

I don't have a good answer for your problem, but there isn't a clutch cable on a 1998. The clutch is hydraulic, like the front brake.
