My guess is it is a bad ground! I had that happen on another bike I owned......check the main ground bus, the battery connections, etc.
You should be able to do it very easily......not sure how perfect the Delkovics fit but it should go on without too much fuss. Simple bolt on...
Best bet might be to get a Delkovic off of ebay......they seem to be decent and very reasonably priced.... SS70 Stainless Silencer Exhaust...
Also check the clutch basket fingers for any abnormal wear or notches......that can cause the issue you have as well. If you find any bad spots...
As far as the chunkiness, these bikes do not like to be below 3 grand, period. If you are lugging around choose a gear that will keep it at 3...
