Plastic fairing fasteners

    I'm posting this video for posterity as I couldn't find any similar ones with a quick search. This is my ghetto method for popping the fairing fastener's on my 2009 VFR800. I assume other Honda fairing fasteners from this era are identical and/or similar, and my hope is that this might help someone out there avoid breaking a few as I did. I'm demonstrating with a fastener in my hand, and furthermore with one that is already broken. As you can see, the two little flaps that lift up have been broken off leaving the center plastic part with a round head. It should have two little tabs that you can wiggle a flathead under in the same way. Others have posted that they're easy to understand if you try, and while this is true, I'm sure there are other impatient knuckleheads out there like me. Hopefully this will be of use to them!

    I must throw in the caveat that I know my nails look disgusting, but I play classical guitar and therefore must maintain slightly long nails on my right hand...it sucks for working on bikes, and I know it looks gross :tongue:

    The '09 fasteners must be different from the '99. I've bought a couple in the last 12 years to replace a couple broken ones, but they rarely break. But I push in the center, not pry out with a screwdriver. Removal is rarely an issue, but the ones on the bottom of the fairing are the most likely to break due to road goop.

    Okay, I didn't listen to the video clip so maybe I missed something, watched but didn't listen.

    There's no audio. Evidently pushing the center doo-dad in is the correct way of removing them, but personally I had trouble getting it to work on flexible fairing pieces, hence the broken ones. That being said, stoshmonster is probably the one you should listen to since I am :crazy:

    Don't feel too bad my friend. I'm not ashamed to admit that I broke a coupla three four of those *%#$@* goofy plastic panel fasteners myself before I figured out the correct way to remove/install them.

    To be honest,even though I know the secret now I still somehow manage to break one of them every now and then. :redface:

    Yeppers. Broke a few of those myself. And the stealership charges about $5.00 each for those little fuggers.

    But alas: --BOLT Motorcycle Hardware--

    The M6 are the ones that I use now. Better than OEM. Those two on the bottom of the faring are particularily bad seems. The M7 Pry clip might be the answwer there. They are new.

    It's worth noting that this isn't the right way of removing these fasteners, and is useful with broken ones. The proper way is to push firmly in the middle...

    The uber cool dudes use Dzus fasteners.

    On side tangent i know but my front faring smashed up but i brought the little fairing blade that goes between front headlight (rc 36) but the brass insert missing from left side middle fairing or top i forget, but can you buy these

    They seem to be press fit at the factory unless you chould glue them in place ?

    I can't quite place what you are referring to here. Could they be the well nuts? If so, they are readily available at the shop, maybe elsewhere too but I don't know. Photographs would help. Any part on your bike should be available as OEM from the shop. But as we all know, OEM are reduculously expensive.

    The critters are called "push rivets" . Google provides.. Honda calls them by different name translated from Japanese meaning, "bend over sucker."
