8th Gen Burning oil

I have a 2015 VFR800F and I think its burning oil at way too quickly of a rate.

At its 1000km service apparently it was fine, but at about 5000km it was just above the low marker on the sight glass and the dealer told me this was normal, got a top up and said that it is expected for them to consume that much oil in that amount of time.

I got the oil changed at 5800km (6000k service) at the dealer, yet... once again it is now down to the low marker on the sight glass at 7400km.

So in the space of 1800km (1100 miles) it has burnt enough oil to go from the full marker to the low marker.

Someone tell me this isn't normal and hopefully give me a list of things I will be soon demanding be done under warranty to remedy the issue.

 

That is not normal. I would say your dealer is full of crap. My 2014 has 12000 miles and the oil level has never moved from where it is after any oil change (every 4000 miles).

 

Ask them if they accidentally used 5W30. (Would this dealer have such oil?)

No sign of leaks or the smell of burning oil?

Shifting is smooth?

 

I use Amsoil pure synthetic, and the level hasn't dropped in the 7K miles I have put on it. Are you checking it on the center stand? (Is yours a Deluxe with a center stand?).

 

I was going to ask the same thing Allyance asked. other wise something fishy is going on. My history of over 100,000 miles on vfrs I haven't come across one that uses oil like that. are you looking at it right after you shut it off?, side stand?

 

I have a 2004 with 40,000 miles on it. Basically the same engine as yours. I also run Amsoil 10-40. My oil level doesn't budge between changes (every 3000 miles).

No outward indications of burning oil - blue smoke, burnt oil smell?

Check and see what oil the dealership is using and try changing your oil and use original Honda oil. Chatting to a honda dealership mechanic he said this common with VFRs they don't agree with some oils , he said they have had cases of vfrs burning a lot of oil, they replace the oil with honda oil 9/10 times fixs the issue they shouldn't burn a drop

 

Hey all, thanks for the information, I will try and answer the questions as best I can and if you have any further information it would be greatly appreciated.

1. Oil used at 6000k service was Honda HP4 10W40
2. No leaks, no smells, shifting is smooth, the VTEC solenoid/actuator clicks rather loudly sometimes though, so may be related.
3. Checking via the method in the owners manual, from cold, run for 5 minutes, shut off, cool for 3 minutes, check oil level in sight glass on level ground on the center stand. (also checked with a mate just holding the bike up straight, same level)
4. No blue/white/anything smoke

 

Turns out they put the wrong oil, 10w/30 HP4, in the VFR. Too thin for redline shifts in Australian heat. Changing to Motul 5100 10w/40 and it should be fine.

 

Was that a Honda dealer?
Shits me when they are incompetent.
That's why I do everything myself.
Hopefully they didn't now use straight 50 to cover up a problem.
This is the problem, how do you now trust them.

 

Everyone knows what weight oil the VFR engine needs. Spank the dealer! I have taken my VFR to a dealer twice. Each time there was a major screw-up.

I wondered if they had a large supply of the wrong oil available and they are putting it in every machine just to get rid of it.

I am very glad the scare of having an engine problem is gone. Good work, and enjoy the ride!

 

Sadly it still has to go back next week to get the VTEC solenoid replaced. Making a clicking noise when vtec turns on or off :-(

I use www.fatcrank.com for all my servicing. He's great. Does good work and is reasonably priced and comes to you (Sydney Metro). Check him out. He's been servicing my VFR ever since 2nd service (post 1000km dealer leak check).

You do a hard or soft break in? I am wondering if the piston rings were properly seated.

Break in as per manufacturer specs. Already did a compression test, all dry and wet readings were withing spec, so its not that.

oil control ring =/= compression ring

 

Good point, well, it only took 1800km to burn through all the oil last time and I still have a year and a half on my warranty, so it shouldn't take long to find out if that was the problem or not.
