Wouldnt you have more torque on the clutch through the higher gears? It would be just like trying to walk up a ramp. Steeper the gear the harder...
I still don't believe it's a gear problem. If it would stay in gear enough to slip and catch it would make a aweful ratcheting noise from the dogs...
Best thing would be remove your calipers and free up any moving parts and grease with a good brake lube. pins often seize up or a caliper piston...

Sounds to be a conecting rod bearing I think but I could be wrong. Ether way id be pulling my engine and going through it.
