Ever had one of those rides when your subconscious did all the riding and got you to your destination?

    Had one this morning. Yikes!

I am selling a house and building a new and acting as the contractor which means a lot of my conscious thought (apparently!) is occupied so that other tasks are now completely being managed by my subconscious. On the way into work this morning I was 15 minutes into my ride when I finally came back to life and found myself at the half way point. WTF!? How''d I get here!?

I had absolutely no recall of what had transpired over the past 15 minutes including a particulalry spooky intersection that is typically infested with gravel trucks, school buses, cellphone using cagers etc.

    Gotta get focused!

Well, at least that is better than waking up with your pants down, sock in your mouth, and a sore ass, not remembering what happened.....

Seriously though....sounds like you really zoned out...I have done that over really long distances, and it is best to pull over and slap yourself awake or rest when that happens. Did you have a lack of sleep?

Maybe, I do sometimes have the 3 a.m. sweats over this house thing. But I am pretty sure I was just running through all the s&#t that needs doing and not focusing on riding.

When I pulled up to a stoplight and became conscious again at the 1/2-way through the ride point I did give myself a smack upside the head.

It's more than  a little spooky when you just can't recall anything about the ride up to that point.

I have done that while cruising into work too. Once there, I try to remember certain parts of my drive! Some parts of it are just gone though:eek: Yeah, weird feeling. Haven't done it on the bike yet though. GET A GRIP MAN! YOU'RE ON YOUR BIKE! lol j/k :) Heading to work is such a routine isn't it? hehe scary.

Glad you got there safely. Amazing how the brain works/doesn't work.

I saw a bike with a sticker by the key on the triple tree:
    "Engage Brain Before Bike"

I have done the brainless rides many times. I have a g.f. that lives about 25 miles away. I've done the freeway back and forth so many times. Everyonce in awhile, I leave there and next thing I'm aware of I'm in front of my house. It like I blinked and wholla. Can't remember anything from the 20+ minute ride. That can't be good. Well safe consious or unconcious riding to all.

STUKA!!! Now stop with that sock thing!

xShadowrider: We have all done that at times, esp in the cage. Look up the "In the Zone" thread under riding technique to read about the difference between being in the zone and being the opposite...so caught up in the world's pressures that you are just "not there." The latter can be dangerous and the former is blissful...ah good KARMA!!!

I prefer to think of it as being "Zen-like"; especially since sooner or later we will become one with the universe physically as well as spiritually/mentally, although not quite in the way we anticipated...

Although one that is in a true state of Zen is unassailable, I don't think running into the side of a minivan counts, since one is doing the assailing.

Yeah, I've done that way too many times. What frightens me even more is being completely alert and aware, and then realizing that I don't expect anything to go wrong, i.e. animal running into traffic, tree limbs (or trees) falling, driver in the opposite lane crossing over, etc.

The more miles you put on, the easier it is to get complacent; particularly when there are a lot of moving parts in your life.

    Pay Attention!

Man, if I stopped thinking about what's going on for more than a nanosecond, I'd fall off the bike or put it into first at 60 mph instead of third... Actually, I've come close to doing that even while fully tuned in. A near-senior-moment, I guess... Geez, now I know why I use that signature.

As has been said this happens to all of us at times. I think it's frequently not so much a function of inattention as it is one of complacency. The difference being that when we are inattentive we see nothing going on around us. When we are complacent we don't notice the commonplace, but frequently the slightest thing that is out of the ordinary jerks us right back into gear. I know on many occasions in my car I'll be crusing along with my mind in another world completely oblivious to what I'm doing or where I am. But let one other driver do something the slightest strange and I'm right back to normal alert. On roads we've traveled dozens / hundreds of times that's an easy trap to get into.

By any chance do your cigars originate in BC and named BC Bud?

Actually these moments are sometimes the nicer moments of my day.
