Worthy mod for 4th, 5th and 6th gens

OK all you corner carvers.

As some of you know I enjoy track days immensely. I also know some of you enjoy track days and/ or riding through your favorite local twisty roads. The VFR does a great job at carving up the tarmac, but if you’ve ever ridden say a Triumph 675, you soon realize that the VFR turns in pretty slow. Not that that is a bad thing but if you are like me, you wish the VFR would turn in just a little quicker.

Good news! Our friends at Thurn Motorsports can hook us up with this without sacrificing stability. Thurn makes a tailriser for the 4th, 5th and 6th gens. The one for the 4th gen raises the rear 25mm.

Installation was easy but I recommend having a friend because the evolution of the third arm is slow in coming and put the bike on its center stand with a piece of ¾ inch plywood underneath. The last bolt you put back in your friend will need to be moving the rear wheel up and down so you can get it in place (my wife kindly helped me). Also I was able to re-grease some parts in the shock linkage and the three bolts that hold the shock linkage triangle in place.

I took the 97 for a quick jaunt last night and let’s just say I am impressed. It’s still not a Triumph 675, but the VFR turns in much quicker and felt very stable in doing so. Now I didn’t get crazy since it was the street but I had a smile on my face for sure.

The only downside to this mod appears to be:

1. When you put it on the side stand the last inch or so when you set it over feels like it was going to fall over LOL! It totally doesn’t. It’s just up higher.
2. If you haul passengers, they are 25mm higher in the wind.
3. You can still use the center stand but the back tire sits on the ground now, so you’ll want to have that piece of ¾ inch plywood around so you can clean and lube your chain with ease.

I don’t consider the above ‘downsides’ but I just thought you all should know.

With shipping and exchange rates the plates cost me $88.00 USD. Also, the Thurn risers are steel with some kind of plating. The stock ones are aluminum and weigh (it feels) half as much. Just a testament to German quality.

I have Thurn 19mm tail riser on my 6th gen, it is not the lower triangle but a shim that goes between the the rear shock and mount and has a tab to hold it in place.
all that is needed to install is to remove the four bolts holding the tank, raise tank in back w/ pc of wood and remove seat and plastic cover on the right side, loosen top shock bolt while bike on center stand install and re-torque the bolts.
cost was around $50.00 - $60.00 ( no center stand or kick stand issues )

I also raised my fork tubes aprox 3/8" for a little more turn in w/ no ill effects on stability,
something you can try as well.

If I raise the bike up, I will have to wear flatform shoe (The 70's):biggrin:
to ride my bike. If you can come up with solution I will go for it:thumbsup:

I can however suggest Viagara to grow something, but it still won't help with this mod:frown:

long it will only raise the bike 1/2 - 1/3 of the 25mm due to linkage rate, I am not sure if it a 1-2 or 1-3 ratio.
also you have a 6th gen correct??

I see the tail riser kit isn't too expensive.. Methinks that's gonna be a winter project. oh, a free and easy mod is to pull the front forks up 10 mm. I notice a better turn in with that. :thumbsup:

Thurn puts the tailriser kits on flea bay for sale from time to time too. (Same price and a little easier ordering).

I am going to reset the suspension and wait until after a track day to raise the front if needed. Right now I only want to do one change at a time.

Next mod on my list? A set of Vortex clip-on's.

I must clarify that I did the tail riser first then started playing a bit w/ the front end and found that w/ the 19mm riser and forks raised 3/8" ( front end lowered ) was the best combo for handling on my bike.

Shim

This is a mod I have planned for this winter while the rain is ruining my riding.Was planning on making a shim or two to slip in between shock mount. Anyone know I would need to make a shim to get 20mm-25mm and save me the guess work?

This is a great mod, but there are a couple things about this mod that need to be brought up.

This mod alters the swingarm downslope angle. If you have changed your gearing by going to a smaller countershaft sprocket, I would be very careful to make sure that the chain isn't eating through the chain slider and chewing on your expensive swingarm.

Another thing with the smaller countershaft sprocket and steepened swingarm downslope angle is suspension related. As the upper chain line changes with respect to the swingarm pivot, this will change the tendancy for the rear of the bike to squat or jack under hard accelleration. If you are running a smaller countershaft sprocket make sure the chain isn't binding up the rear suspension and that the shock can use all of it's available travel without being bound up by latent chain tension.

Even with the stock countershaft sprocket it is possible that track riders will notice a change in how the rear suspension and chassis geometry changes actually effect the machine under accelleration, yes it will certainly help the initial corner turn in feel, but it can also adversley effect how the chassis reacts on corner exit.

 

Thanks NCB, you are correct.

Thurn (in the directions they give you) state that you need to check the chain tension. I think they must know street riders generally have their chains too tight.

Mine was still really loose LOL! I am amazed at how loose you run a chain for track riding.

As far as corner exits and getting on the gas hard, well I'll have to wait till next years track days to see what's what. I may be asking you some questions NCB.
