How can I get the rear of my 3rd gen off the ground? There doesn't seem to be any way to jack it up from below. Is the best way to remove the rear seat and winch it up, or am I missing something?

I just replaced my broken gauge cluster (mount was broken and tach didn't work) w/ a used tach... but the gauges don't light up! Joy.[/rant]

If you have a center stand, thats the ticket. No center stand, place jack under exhaust just in front of collector with a small piece of wood under exhaust. This is the balance point. Jack very slowly and have help to make sure balance is maintained.

Pit Bull makes a rear stand for 3rd gen vfr's. It docks in the center of the rear wheel hub assembly and gets your bike's butt in the air like you see with modern sport bikes. It allows access to most rear work as well as any exhaust work you might need to do. Unless you have access to an engine hoist, this is another great way to elevate the rear of you bike.

Or there's always the poor man's rear wheel stand... couple of jackstands and an old axle or other metal rod...

I had a cheapo rear stand from eBay (the red ones) that sagged over the years. Now I use a piece of 1" (or so) pipe from home depot (precut, $3) wrapped in duct tape on normal bike (pitbull) stands... easy peazy

Thank you all for the ideas. I'm gonna grab some black pipe and use my existing stand to get the rear of it up.
