wont shift into second

my 86 vfr750 wont shift past neutral. it goes into first and neutral no problem but it wont allow me to shift up any higher. i was riding it and went to shift from first to second but it would not allow me to do so. anyone have any idea why?

 

drop the oil pan and see if a pin is down there, the shift segment pin for second may have come out

 

You need to pull the cover off the shift shaft and inspect the operation and possibly remove the linkage and turn the shift drum manually to verify the problem is not with the drum or forks.

 

I'll have to check that this weekend if I can get my shift at work covered... thanks for the info
