 I start the Motorcycle Safety Foundation Rider Coach program on Friday morning. It's 8 days of 12 hour days. 1st day is all classroom & 2-8 are mix of range exercises & classroom. Day 8 the rest of the candidates & myself will actually teach a Beginner's Street Skills course to MAFB riders.

I've been trying for this position for 8 years, wish me luck.:thumb:

Have fun with it! If you are as detail oriented about riding as your opinions, you'll do fine.:lever: Teach the peeps to look up so they don't end up like that group ride!

    Ha-Ha!

I am going into my second year as an MSF Coach. Good Luck KC, I am sure you'll do fine.

It can be a tough job and it is a commitment, but it sure is alot of fun watching the participants learn and teach themselves.

Keep me posted on your progress:smile:

It rained like buckets today so EVERY one of the candidates showed up in cars/trucks. Tomorrow is the first day of riding. Should be fun.

Is it competitive to become an instructor, or was your work schedule in the way?

All they offer at Ft. Bragg is the Advacned Rider's Course, and a women on a Gold Wing has been running it for the last 5 years. One has to attend a local community college course for the beginners course around here.

Look who you're talking to. Of course my duty schedule is in the way. The last 2 times I applied it was all duty schedule that prevented me.

This time, there were 21 applicants for 12 positions. 2 were squid retards so they were laughed out of the building. 2 are PCS'ing in less than 1 year so they're out. One had a DUI a long time ago so he's out.

The 12 were selected (with 4 alternates) by a number of criteria. I was selected based on:
I take a MSF ERC every year & the current instructors know me & recognize me. They know I don't have to take the class but I do because I enjoy them & I learn something everytime. I get major kudos for that.
I have almost 20 safe years under my belt. I've been in one street accident in 20 years. A dingbat pulled out of a parking lot without looking & I had no chance.
    I DO NOT squid
I have a great deal of experience instructing in a military setting.

Are you back or still "over there"?

I am back home until October. I will do another 8 month tour, this time in the" volatile" south. That means more "game" to hunt, baby!

Hey, I was going to PM you about this,...our Aerial Refuel coming from Spang to PAFB got scratched mid-flight. We got diverted to ME for like 4 hours. Sucked. You guys are worth your weight in gold, believe that! We really felt your absence that day.

Planning a quick day trip to Deal's Gap from here some mid-week day in June. I owe it to myself after this last deployment. The Taliban decided to get stupid with us, and I still need to shake off a little combat stress. Can't think of a better way to accomplish that mission! (the amount of sex required would be rather unfair to my wife) :)

hey, BTW, what is your definition of Squid, KC? Not to hijack your thread....

I define them as the idiots on bikes waaay to big for the inexperienced rider (which they are). They typically wear shiney non-DOT approved helmets (shaped like squids...huh) or none at all and no other safety gear, i.e. T-shirts and shorts only... Lots of them around here unfortunately, riding Busa's, GSX-R liters and ZX-14s (which is ridiculous given there lack of experience.) I even saw one guy wearing flip-flops. Sheesh.

Maybe we should post a new thread and get a collective definition from the group?

To get my definition add this to your definition:

Anyone who's supply of testosterone is larger than their supply of riding skill AAANNNDDD refuses to accept/acknowledge/learn from this.

I'm a BIG fan of Darwinism. I will never come right out & say that I wish someone would crash but I sure as hell won't feel sorry for those idiots when they do.

My next trip to Robinsville this summer has been moved to this fall. I just found out I'm "going" (if you know what I mean & I'm sure you do) again, 7th time in 3 years. Just in time for the summer. Basically, I will miss all but 2 weeks of summer. Man, I REALLY freaking hate the middle east.

Bro you are not alone. We shouldn't have gone there in the first place. It was all BS. I still don't know what the point of it all was or is. Whoever is reponsible for this crap we are in should be held responsible. We deserve the truth since we are paying for it. you guys with your service and lives and all of us with our taxes. And as a former Sailor I greatly appreciate you guys sacrifices. Thanks again and I hope you have nice weather today.
    Peace

OK, after the first day of riding, I have discovered two flaws with my VFR that under normal circumstances most likely would go un-noticed.

    1. The hydraulic clutch. I feel like I did a 5 hour hand workout. My left hand is pretty sore & it's only day one. The funny part is, I never noticed this when I took the MSF classes.

    2. The FI. The 5th Gen's are somewhat known for slightly snatchy throttle just off idle. At the walking speeds it isn't a problem. At 10mph-15mph, 1st is kinda jerky & 2nd is too tall. I wonder if a Power Commander would fix/smooth this?

Our Instructor is retired USAF (22 years) & has been riding for 35 years. He's been MSF coaching for 12 years & instructing other coaches for 4 years. He seems like a really great dude.

    1. I kinda feel the same thing myself after 250+ miles today....
    2. The PC will smooth first some but it's still a little jumpy at low speed if my bike with a PC II is any indicator.

    OK, Day 2...

    My hand is pretty sore.

Today, we got our first chance to actually teach part of the class to the other instructor candidates. The classroom portion was teaching the MSF Beginners Rider Course book to each other. The riding was the actual range exercises new students would learn. We also started praticing the skill test that the instructors need to pass. By the end of this class, my left hand is going to be twice the size of my right hand.

An interesting side note, one of the guys in the class just bought a Yamaha VStar 650 on Thursday last week. It died on him on the way to the base today. In case you didn't quite get that, his bike died the THIRD time he ever rode it. It only has 43 miles on it. Needless to say, this person is not happy.

that sux. I'm sure the dealer will take care of it, though. I'd be a little miffed myself. I think I'm getting spoiled riding the 5g VFR. Over 10000 miles last year and no problems other than when I messed with things. This bike just seems to be bulletproof. It's not being babied either, I ride the piss out of it.

I sold hundreds of Star bikes and never had one suck like that, Yamaha needs to remove head from ass. Usually a PDI issue IMO. Good luck dude.

Yo KC good luck with the training - I went to the Lee Parks ARC (Advanced Rider Course) last year and also went to Lee Parks clinic and trained as an ARC Coach. The Lee Parks ARC has been adopted by the military and it is a great clinic for advanced riders. I have a school that is ready to sponser me for the MSF training but I do not know if I will have the time. Anyway Good Luck with the training and have fun!!!!!
