Hey ya'll, was hoping to tap your expertise. My '09 is living in New York City for the first winter, after being in Seattle for years. In Seattle it's warm enough to ride year round more or less, and so even in the winter I was riding every few weeks for errands and whatnot. In New York, I plan on putting my baby away for a good 3 months or so, as temps will likely be below freezing and I don't want to hit ice on these crap roads. My questions are in regard to storage. I don't have a way to garage the bike, but was planning on securing it to sidewalk bolt, putting my cover on it, and then just jury-rigging heavy plastic sheeting around the exposed tires/chain etc. What else should I do? Fuel stabilizer? Pull the battery? Is this going to be hell on my bike, and should I fork out the ridiculous NYC rates and try to garage somewhere nearby? Any advice welcome, thanks.
I am convulsing in a spastic fit of emotions just thinking aboot storing a bike in such a fashion. You cant find a place to store it oot of the elements?
NY? Buy some theft insurance, leave it out and somebody will steal it. No cold or ice or crappy roads to deal with.
I don't know anyone in NY well enough to store a bike at their place. Even way out in Queens it's $170 a month to garage a bike in the nearby parking garages. As with everything in New York, the prices are ludicrous. I'm not too happy about it either. Maybe I'll look at storing it somewhere farther out on Long Island.
Even at that price you still may be money ahead given the possible damage from the elements and theft. I would take lot's of pictures of my bike for no other reason than to have something to remember it by if I parked it on the streets of New York.
You have a Honda and live in CA. The odds of your bike being stolen are, statistically, orders of magnitude greater than in NYC. Auto theft really isn't bad here as one would think (trust me, it surprised me too). I'm much more worried about the elements. Sounds like I should do what it takes to get it indoors.
Have you checked into the idea of putting it in a self storage unit? You can also find lots of options on New York Craigslist. See link below. LINK - New York parking & storage classifieds "motorcycle" - craigslist Rollin
Rollin ya damn show off stealing my thunder..... Had not thought of Craigslist. Just remember seeing some of the softer Coloradans getting together on local forum to store bikes. Pussies.
I live in NY and have an 06 VFR and have used this place in Brooklyn for off season storage for the last four years and recommend them without hesitation. New York Mobile Self Storage > Home You will get your own room that you lock and the room is 5 feet wide by 8 feet long by 7 ½ feet high, big enough for you bike and whatever else gear or storage you may have. It is climate controlled, secure and the storage rooms and floor are made of wood, which is better for your tires to prevent flat spots. They are right off the 39th street exit on the BQE or the 36th street stop on the D or N train. I last year I paid $89.00 a month. Reconsider leaving the bike outdoors for the winter, between people parking, dogs, snow, ice, salt, parking tickets and freezing temperatures, theft will be the least of your concerns. It will trash your bike in no time.
If you do store it outside make sure your no where near the street. Otherwise the street dept may end up burying it in snow and then plow it away by mistake. Or it will get buried under snow pack so solid you'll have to wait for the spring thaw in able to get to it. Or do the old hammer and chisel routine like a stone carver. Make a plywood box cover for it if you have to then paint "chicken coop" or something like that on the side to throw the thief's off. Otherwise I would try and find some type of indoor/covered storage for it. It's NYC for christ sake. Even if it's bolted down it's stolen.
Boy, it is amazing the perception of New York. You all know the movie "Escape from New York" was fiction right? It really is not that bad.
My local Honda shop will pick up a bike and store it for a dollar a day. Call some of the local shops and see what type of program they have. What they count on is doing your oil change and any other service over the winter for you. You can't be the only guy in NYC with this problem.
